Some rogue samurai were walking through town and thought it would be funny to shed blood. Their first target was a child who was three years old.
Walking out of a tea shop, you saw the scene and panicked. You knew the little boy very well.
The samurai dragged him into the middle of the street in broad daylight. The boy cried and struggled against the restraints they had used to tie him up. He fell onto his side, his face in the floor. You were so scared, but you had to do something.
As the leader of the samurai raised his sword, you ran in to shield the child. This resulted in a huge gash in your back. It almost matched the length of the sword that created it. The diagonal line began to seep bright red blood. It soaked your clothes in an instant.
Scared, the rogue samurai fled the scene, and many bystanders watched in shock.
Who is that woman?
Why did she do something so stupid?
Doesn't she value her life? It was just a child.
"Mommy?" The boy watched you with wide eyes.
Yes. That's right. This boy was your son.
As you grew weaker, your hands quickly moved to untie him. Once he was freed, your body fell to the ground.
"Mommy!" Your son cried. He didn't know what else to do so he curled himself into a ball right in front of you. "Mommy. It's okay." He touched your face as he saw tears run down.
"Baby... can you... help... mommy?" You weakly asked.
"Yes mommy." The boy sat up, it was obvious that he didn't understand you were dying.
"Go... find... daddy." You saw him nod and run toward the Shinsengumi's headquarters.
But as soon as he left, you felt so tired, all you wanted to do was close your eyes. The large gash didn't hurt at first, but right now it stung so badly.
"(Y/n)!" A familiar voice called out. You looked up to see that it was the kindhearted Sanosuke. It seems that he must have been on patrol.
Sanosuke stripped himself of his Shinsengumi coat and used it to put pressure on the wound, to lessen the blood loss. You cried out in pain and watched as Sanosuke yelled for a medical doctor.
"(Y/n)!" You managed to hear the voice of your favorite person in the whole world. "(Y/n)!" He cried out. You moved your head so that you could see his face, but your eyelids only grew heavier.
"No! Don't sleep!" Heisuke yelled at you. His voice began to fade out. "Don't you dare close your eyes!" He yelled.
"Hei...suke..." You whispered.
"W-What?" He asked. "Stop talking. I'm gonna carry you back! Sanan-San will fix this."
"No..." Your hand reached out to touch his own. "Protect..." You took a big gasp. "Our..." Another one. "Son..."
"Of course I will! You already knew I was goin- DON'T SHUT YOUR EYES!" He yelled, startling bystanders and onlookers.
"Heisuke, her pulse is thready." Sanosuke panicked. "It's slowing down."
"(Y/n)! Stay with me!" He cupped your face. Tears were streaming down his own face in large waves.
"Tired..." you managed to breathe out.
"I know you are! But please..." he sobbed. "Stay with me... I can't do it without you... I cant raise a child without you... I can't live without you..."
You felt a warm tear slip down your cheek. A contrast to your cold body.
"Heisuke. She's lost so much blood. She won't make it." Sanosuke removed his hands from the wound. The pressure wasn't working to stop the blood anymore. "She lost so much blood already. It's best to say your goodby-"
"No!" Heisuke dragged your torso up so that your head rested in his chest. He hugged you like his life depended on it.
"Love..." You uttered before releasing one last breath. "You..."
Heisuke's eyes widened in shock. He felt the breathe shake as it left your body. "I love you too." Heisuke cried, holding your lifeless body even tighter. "I love you too."
Sanosuke watched as Heisuke picked your body up, handling it gently. He carried you all the way to the Shinsengumi's headquarters. Sanan saw Heisuke and shook his head, already knowing what he was going to ask.
"Give it to her!" Heisuke demanded. "Where is it?"
"The Water of Life won't bring a dead person back to life, Heisuke." Sanan turned around to walk away.
"How do you know?! You haven't tried yet!" Heisuke was desperate to bring you back.
"I have." Sanan stared at Heisuke from over his shoulder. "If you give her the Water of Life now, all she will come back as is a brainless pile of mass that breathes and can't move. Do you think she would want to be paralyzed like that?"
Heisuke's eyes widened. He wasn't thinking. But Sanan was right. You wouldn't want that.
"Daddy?" A little voice called out from the other end of the corridor. "You brought mommy!" He smiled and laughed.
"Yeah." Heisuke dropped to his knees, defeated.
This kid. This shared child of yours that had qualities of you and him alike, would be his newfound strength.
"Mommy's sleeping... forever." Heisuke whispered to the boy. "Let's put her to rest in the ground tonight, okay?"
"The ground? That's weird. What about Mommy's bed?"
This caused for tears to well up in Heisuke's eyes. He never took the time to realize that your shared child had your eyes and your optimism.
"I'll be a better daddy from now on, I promise." He kissed the boy's forehead. "And mommy... mommy will become our guardian angel."
"After we let her sleep in the ground?"
"Yeah, after she sleeps in the ground."
"Then she'll be our angel?"
Heisuke held you tightly. A smile fell across his face because when he looked down, it looked like you were really sleeping.
"Yeah, she'll be our angel."
