A Walk

Her POV

"Can we just go on a walk around town?" Cameron asks, looking up at me with puppy dog eyes.

"Yeah! Can we? Can we? Can we?" His brother and sister join in on the "fun" of asking. How can I say no to three sets of puppy eyes?

"Okay!" I cave.

"Yes!" they all cheer together, "But we can't be gone too long. Your mom should be back in the next couple of hours."

We start making our way down the sidewalk, people everywhere. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea.

"Look at what's inside here!" Cameron gives a little giggle as he points to a window of a shop, filled with enough Lego sets to last him years.

"Legos? Again? Why can't we ever go anywhere without you pointing out or finding Legos?" Tori, the oldest and the only girl, yawns.

"Legos are his thing, Tori. Don't be mad. You have your thing," Jacob defends his little brother.

"Yes, Jacob. They are, and we can't be mad if he wants to look at them, because he is the one that asked to walk around," I finish, giving a small wink to Cameron.

The other two sigh in response, knowing I'm right.

When Cameron finally decides to move on, we keep walking. They all seem very happy, stopping at almost every window, pointing at different toys and gadgets. When I agreed to this nanny job, I didn't realize how easy it really would be with these kids. I need the money as I go to college in the fall and they're almost all old enough to be left alone anyway. Really, I'm here to drive them around and break up fights.

"I want to stay longer!" Tori.

"Well we want to keep walking!" Jacob.

Speaking of the devil.

"Hey hey hey. What's going on?" I step into their "conversation."

"Tori wants to stay and look at these girly things for longer, but Cameron and I want to go to the video game store."

"Where is Cameron?" I realize he isn't with them.

I turn around just in time to see an older man run and try to swipe Cameron away. I feel like the whole world slows down as he starts to run right past me, holding a frightened Cameron in his arms.

I don't think, I just do the first thing that I can think of. I look at Cameron's wide eyes staring at me, the fear shining through, and swing. I swing as hard and as fast as I can.

I connect with the side of his head and he goes down- hard.

I grab Cameron as fast as I can, hugging him and checking to make sure he has no bruises or anything before shoving him behind me with Tori and Jacob. They automatically wrap him up between them.

"I would think again before trying to mess with my kids. I'm warning you. Stay down," I get a sudden burst of confidence as I stare daggers at this man's back.

I don't have enough time to react before he gets back up, holding his head in one hand and a-

"Oh my God," I breathe out.

-small pistol in the other.

"Give me the kid and no one has to get hurt," the man finally speaks. His voice scratchy and harsh. I get chills. I don't move.

"You are in a very public place right now, sir. I suggest putting that away and walking away before I or twenty other people call the police for attempted kidnapping."
