I woke up to the sound of my doorbell ringing throughout the house. I crawled out of the bed like a bear coming out of hibernation. I waked out of the bedroom and down the hall that led to the front door. The bell kept ringing and ringing and it started to annoy me inside. I reached for the doorknob and swung the door open forgetting I was only wearing underwear. On the other side of the door Kedryn was standing there with her eyes wide trying to look away from my body.
"What do you need" I said in a aggressive tone because I was tired. She stood there for awhile not answering my question.
"Um, like five minutes ago two people just randomly showed up at the gates. I don't know why but our guards let them in and there at the hospital now!" She said quickly as urging me to get ready fast. My eyes widened as I turned around and grabbed some pants and a shirt.
"Do we know these people?" I asked quickly putting on my clothes. She just stood there watching me put on my clothes.
"Do we know these people!"
"No no, I said random people." I slipped my shoes on and laced them down then walked out the door. She followed me and we both sped walked down the street. Many people were behind and ahead of us. I guess all curious to see who these new people were. Kedryn and I started into a jog. We approached the hospital and there were people everywhere. Lucky for our size we could squeeze past most. You couldn't even see the walls in the hospital because of the amount of people.
"So were just going to keep excepting people into the community? What if we run out of homes?!" I heard someone yell at the Hispanic receptionist. She disregarded them rolling her eyes and went back to reading her magazine. People kept yelling at the at the receptionist as I walked by. I saw a man standing by the elevator who looked like he was waiting for something.
"Excuse me sir, what are you waiting for?" I asked worried for what he would say.
"The elevator of course, there allowing some people in at a time to meet our new guest" he said smiling.
"So your not against these new people staying here like most?" He turned and looked down at me laughing. I didn't know what he found so funny but apparently it got to him.
"No no no, I'm completely against it" he said trying not to laugh, "we don't need more people here. I'm going up there to tell them to leave and never return. There not welcome here!" I turned around and walked away. I needed to find out who these people where so I could state my opinion. Over to my right the stairwell was still in good shape. I proceeded to the red door and pushed it open. The stairwell was dimly lit but I could still make out the stairs beneath my feet. The stairs were gray and had holes in them here and there. I checked ever floor in the hospital until I saw a lot of people on the sixth floor. That's when I knew this was the right floor. Kedryn stayed behind down in the main lobby.
I walked up to the crowd of people who seemed only focused on the wood colored door. It was open but doctor Serrano was standing in the doorway. I squeezed through the crowd of people and up to Serrano. He didn't realize I was there because he was focused on all the grown people trying to get in.
"Serrano, doctor Serrano!" I said quickly trying to get his attention. He looked down at me and seemed very excited to see me.
"Oh thank god Rhett! Get in here now!" He screamed. I don't know why he wanted me but I didn't question. I crawled under him and his lab coat and he slammed the door shut in all those peoples faces. He locked the door as I got back up on my feet. I looked up past him and saw another person in the room I couldn't make out.
"Who are you?" I asked looking at the person. The shadow of the room covered him like a blanket.
"I should ask who you are" said the person standing in the shadow not revealing himself. I got angry but didn't decide to show it. He walked out of the light and I could hardly make out who it was. He was smiling and I didn't know why. When I could fully see his face it shocked me to the fullest existent.
"Ty?" I said looking hopeful. He nodded his head with a smile on his face.
"Where the hell have you been man?" I asked smiling and laughing. He waved me over to him and I walked in his direction.
"There's someone who would like to see you" he said smiling. I walked around the corner of the room and what I saw brought me to tears. Jessica was passed out lying in the hospital bed hooked up to the life support machine. I quickly went into denial. I grabbed a syringe and held it into a stabbing position. Serrano quickly grabbed my arm and threw me to the ground restraining me.
"What the hell I wrong with you!" He screamed at the top of his lungs. I jerked around trying to break his grip.
"No no! I can't do this anymore!" I screamed. I saw Ty standing there shocked from all that was going on. He stepped back from the scene.
"Your not hallucinating! You took the injection she is real!" Screamed Serrano. I rolled to a calm state and dropped the syringe. Serrano let his grip go and I got back up on my feet. I looked down at Jessica still passed out from the pain medication she was given. I started to cry and leaned over her body hugging her. I wouldn't let go, I never wanted to loose her in the first place.
"When will she be up?" I asked still hugging her crying like a baby. Serrano didn't answer me and I got even more angry than I was before.
"I said when will she be up?!"
"By tomorrow morning at the latest. We will call you on our radio when she is up tomorrow." I let go of her and wiped my tears from my face. I looked over at Ty who was smiling now.
"Thank you" I said looking down. He nodded his head still smiling. I turned to Serrano and shook his hand. The people have seemed to of left the door. Serrano opened the door and let me out. I proceeded to the elevator thanking god for letting her live. I don't think there has ever been a moment in my life that I was happier. I pressed the button the the elevator which lit up blue. It opened and I entered. When the doors opened again everyone was in the lobby staring at me. I walked past everyone and tried not to make eye contact.
Kedryn joined me as I walked out the door. It was nighttime and the streets where lit by the street lights. I must of been in there a long time. I quickly sped walked down the street and Kedryn tried to keep up with me.
"What is it? Why was everyone looking at you?" She asked looking worried. I didn't respond but instead kept walking. I saw the main gate that seemed to of been breached. Further on down the road I saw a crashed truck. I. Guessing that's how Ty and Jessica got here. Kedryn didn't seemed bothered by it and disregarded it.
"Dammit Rhett, tell me what happened!" She said starting to get aggravated. I blew her off as we walked up to my house and unlocked the door. She frowned and grabbed my arm as I walked inside.
"Tell me what the fuck happened!" She demanded. I didn't turn around but instead shut the door on her behind me. I heard her walk away in an aggressive manor. I fell to my knees crying screaming "yes" over and over again. I went to my bed and crawled under the covers. I was warm and comfortable beneath the brown sheets. I turned the lights off and fell asleep to the happiness I knew awaited me tomorrow.
