It was Thursday morning and Josh had just finished getting ready for work. It was currently 7:10 and he wanted to get the kids up and ready so that he had time to make them breakfast.
Walking into Laila's room, he let out a smile when he saw his daughter curled up in her baby pink sheets, clutching on to her baby blanket.
Josh has tried for years to get Laila to give up her blanket but so far it hasn't worked. She can't sleep without it. It was white with little bee's on it, so that's why he had nicknamed her bee.
He sat down on her bed and gently shook her. It was easy to wake her up unlike grayson.
"Laila," josh started. "It's time to wake up now." he spoke gently.
She stirred gently before opening her eyes. "Hi daddy." she mumbled happily.
Josh smiled and kissed her forehead. "Goodmorning bee. I already laid out your clothes. Do you need me to help you or do you got it?" he asked his daughter.
Laila sat up and rubbed her eyes, still holding her blanket. "I can do it. good job at picking out my outfit, you're getting better." she teased him slightly.
Josh stood proudly at that. "Thank you. It isn't hard when all you wear is overalls."
Laila loved overalls. Josh swore she had them in every single color. But he thought she looked absolutely adorable in them.
He bent down and kissed her forehead. "Okay baby i'm gonna go wake your brother up." he announced before walking out of her room.
Grayson's room was right across the hall from his sisters. It had animal stickers all over the door because Grayson absolutely loved animals. He could tell you about any animal for hours and hours. He also had a lot of stuffed animals as well. his favorite one was his stuffed raccoon and he would sleep with that one every night.
When Josh walked into his room and smiled brightly when saw that he was already awake. He sat down next to him on his bed.
"Morning bear—geez you're sweating do you feel okay?" Josh stopped midsentence as he began to feel grayson's head.
Grayson looked at his dad and his bottom lip began to tremble and tears started to pour out of his eyes.
"D-dad I-I don't w-wa-nt t-to go t-t-to sc-hool, m-my t-te-acher is m-mean b-because I d-don't ta-alk." Grayson stuttered out as he began sobbing on josh.
"Oh Grayson." Josh whispered as he rocked his son back and forth, trying not to let his eyes water.
"Do you want to stay home today? I can call in, my boss will understand." Josh asked him gently.
Grayson didn't respond, only nodded his head as he tried to control his breathing.
Laila walked in her brother's room and got concerned. "dad? what's wrong with bub?" she asked him.
"He's just having an off day and i'm going to stay at home with him today. Are you going to be okay if Auntie Abbie comes and takes you to school today?" josh asked as he rubbed his tired eyes.
Laila nodded. "Yes daddy. I'll go make cereal and wait for Auntie Abbie." she spoke before kissing her dad's head and hugging her brother tightly.
When Laila left the room, Grayson started crying again. "I-i'm sorry." he whispered.
Josh looked down at him, confusion on his face. "For what?" he asked him.
"Bb-ecause i-i'm a-annoying and you a-always d-do t-things f-for me b-b-because I c-can't myself a-and y-you h-have t-to p-pay f-for s-speech t-eachers b-because o-of m-my s-stupid s-stutter and—" Grayson ranted before josh cut him off.
"don't finish that sentence," josh started as he sat Grayson up from off his lap so that he was looking at him.
"You are not annoying bear. You and your sister are the best thing that has ever happened to me, okay? You have anxiety which is okay, I do too. I would do anything to help you. I think your stutter is adorable and I love hearing you talk, even if it takes a while for you to form words. I am your dad. I am supposed to take care of you. I love you so much my little Grayson Everest." Josh spoke as he hugged his son tight.
"L-love you." grayson replied quietly.
Once Josh let go, he sat up. "I'm going to get your sister situated and then I will run you a bath. you're sweating really bad and we can put new jammies on you." Grayson nodded his head and laid back down and cuddled with his raccoon.
After Abbie came and picked up Laila, Josh woke up Grayson again because he fell back asleep. He ran his bath water and put some bubbles in. Once Grayson got in the tub Josh washed his hair and let him play for a while and decompress.
Josh hated that Grayson was so scared to go to school. It absolutely destroyed Josh. It hurt him seeing his own son afraid to talk to people.
He was pulled out of his thoughts when he heard grayson say he was ready to get out. Josh got his towel off the back of the door and wrapped him up in it. They walked to his room and sat down on the floor in front of his dresser.
"Which ones do you want to wear?" Josh asked Grayson as he opened up his pajama drawer.
Grayson thought for a moment before he pulled out his lion ones. "T-these ones!" he said excitedly. Josh laughed and nodded and he helped him get dressed.
After doing that, he grabbed grayson's detangler spray and comb and did his hair so that it wouldn't get all clumped together.
"Do you wanna make brownies?" josh asked him, a smile on his face. Grayson nodded his head excitedly and grabbed his dad's hand and lead him to the kitchen.
Josh got out the brownie mix and all of the supplies and sat Grayson on the counter so that he could help him. While they were mixing everything together, Grayson began to speak.
"C-can," he started before getting frustrated.
"You got it bear, think about what you wanna say before you say it." he spoke softly.
"Can we put chocolate c-chips in i-it?" he asked, barely stuttering.
Josh smiled from ear to ear. "You did so good! we can definitely add chocolate chips in it." he smiled as he went and grabbed them from the pantry. Grayson put some in and Josh put the brownie mix in the pan and the oven.
While they were waiting for them to cook, they were laying on the couch with a huge blanket and Grayson's raccoons, while watching spongebob.
Josh heard little snores and he looked down and saw that Grayson had fallen asleep on his lap. his little arms were clutched around his raccoon and his cheeks were smooshed against Josh. He thought he looked so peaceful and beautiful. Josh loved him and his sister so much.
He gently picked him up and carried him to his bed, laying him on his stomach. Josh covered him up and kissed his forehead, before walking out and shutting the door behind him.
