Chapter 2

"Do you know where we are cause I sure as hell do not?" Violet says looking at her phone, pointing to every building in site and cross-matching it to the map she had pulled up.
"So that's Marquette hall and right next to it is crown plaza so we're trying to get to Lawrence hall which is one of the dorms and it's next to Blackstone hall, which is.... that way!" she immediately starts down the sidewalk leaving me in the dust.
"Vi wait" I shuffle behind her, pulling both of our checked bags in tow. fuck that girl can walk fast. "sorry i got ahead of myself, I'm just super excited not to live with mom breathing down my neck telling me to take my meds and do my treatments. They've been babysitting me since I can remember and it's exhausting honestly. I need a break from them to live my damn life." she sighs and I know what she means. It's hard for mom to take a step back and let her just exist but she's been trying to be better this summer. I'm afraid that the distance may be harder for both of them.
"I get it, mom can be a bit of a smother sometimes but she means well and you know that. But it'll be better that we're spaced out from her so that you can gain some freedom. I know it's been hard." she gives me a look and it makes me regret opening my mouth in the first place. mom is a touchy subject considering they have been radio silent to each other since summer started.
"okay let's get our keys and do this thing." I change the subject quickly, not wanting to draw more attention to the fact that the most important people in my life won't speak to each other.
"first and last name please." the women sitting at the table in the entrance to the res halls asks, a fake smile plastered on her face. " Violet and Raine Parson." She pulls the folders out swiftly and hands them to us.
"Here are your key cards as well. these will get you into all of the academic buildings and your dorm rooms. You guys will be in 212 and 408 in Lawrence hall." Wait...
"I'm sorry, there must be a mistake. We're supposed to be living together? Why are their two rooms." my eyebrows furrow as I furiously tip through the folder.
"No mistake. Violet will be dorming in 212 and Raine is dorming in 408 on the athlete floor." she shrugs, looking back at her computer. "Wait-" I start to say but she cuts me off. "If you have a problem with it, take it up with res life in two weeks otherwise you are going to have to deal with it."
You've got to be kidding me.
"Whatever, let's go. She is no help at all." I scoff, pulling violets arm toward the elevator, our suitcases in tow. "Okay but what do we do Raine?" She looks at me, a concerned look etched on her face. "I don't think there is a lot we can do. I dislike this as much as you do but you heard her, we have to wait two weeks."
"two weeks too long." She sigh as the elavator opens and she starts to walk down the hall. "I'll see you in 15 minutes okay?" she sends me a smile and I try to return it. The door closes and I'm left alone in the elevator till the 4th floor, where I get out and find my room. I try out my key card and it scans green as I open the door.
Post Malone plays softly in the room as I see an array of boxes spewed across the whole apartment. a figure stands in the corner, bopping her head to the beat as she unpacks her stuff onto her bed. "Hey you must be my roommate?" I say and the girl spins around and I immediately recognize her from the airport. No fucking way.
"Shit it's you. apparently this town is smaller than I thought." She seemed annoyed as she turned back around, taking more out of her boxes. "right side is yours, otherwise don't touch my shit please."
her tattoo sleeve was just as prominent as it was earlier, maybe even more so now since I was this close to her. "Are you at least going to tell me your name or are you going to be an asshole about that too?" I cross my arms, raising an eyebrow.
"Valencia Muertos but you can call me Val." She says, not even turning to face me. "are you going to tell me yours or are we going to stand here in silence." she glances back at me and I stumble over my words. "I'm Raine Parson."
"Nice to meet you Raine." And that was all that came out of her mouth. I purse my lips, wheeling my suitcase into the room and then without another peep I slip out of the room. Well that was awkward.....
"please tell me your roommate is better than mine." is the first thing I say to violet as she opens up the door smiling. "I mean you can ask her she's right here." she opens the door a little further to see a girl with bubblegum pink, shoulder-length hair and bright blue eyes.
"Hi you must be Raine, one of Violets's siblings, I'm Evelyn. Sorry about this whole room mix up thing but at least it's only two weeks, worst case scenario. I can guarantee that I am not a serial killer and I will not kill your sister. That is a girl scout promise" she holds up three fingers and I can't help but let out a laugh.
"Okay cadette. What are you majoring in, if I can ask?"
"Of course! I'm majoring in studio art. Love all the hands on stuff. I know that Violet is majoring in Public health with a minor in women's studies, right?"
"correct yes. I'm no smarty pants like Ray though. She's a Biochem major and is gonna be a physicians assistant." A look of surpirse goes across her face and she looks directly at me. "oooo fancy. I barely made it through AP Chem so no thank you. no more science for me. Done with that shit forever, thank god."
"While you make a valid point, I know what I'm getting myself into. lots and lots of science..." I groan, making myself comfortable on the futon they set up in their room. "the place looks nice already, Vi don't forget we have to grab our packages from the post office and split up our stuff cause we're not living in the same place. Mom might have a fit that I can't watch you to make sure you do your treatments."
"What treatments?" Evelyn asks and Violet shoots me a crossed look and I immediately shut my mouth. "our mom has a big thing about brushing our teeth and whitening treatments. need to look perfect for our first day of school picture you know." she sputters out on the fly and I understand why. new place full of new people who don't know that she's sick.
"That's cool. My mom freaks out every time I dye my hair, but I still do it anyways. she especially loves when I leave the sink stains," Evelyn shrugs, going back to organizing her books and Violet lets out a breath. she points at me a puts her finger to her lips, making a zipping motion.
"Yea.. no our mom would kill us if we did that. I'm starting to think that our mom kinda sucks." Vi flops down next to me on the futon, laying her head on my shoulder. "So i'm thinking I should dye my hair purple."
"Over mom's dead body." she snorts, "Yea I wish, now let's go get our stuff from the post office before you have practice." I grab her hand and she pulls us out the door without another word.
