Chapter 5

"You ready for the scrimmage against Washington today?" Valencia asks as she shoves her socks into her bag from her dresser and I give her a side eye. "Oh, so we are being cordial now huh?"
"I'm not a total asshole, you know?" she grumbles, continuing to pack her game bag. "Not an asshole, just a cheater." I fire back and she angrily shoves another thing into her Adidas bag. "Gemma and I are casual, she is allowed to do what she wants and so am I. She goes to school in Colorado so it's not a reality for us to see each other seriously. So I'm not a cheater, just exploring my options post-high school sweetheart."
"whatever, even though it is none of your information I am not excited in the least. You get a shoe into the starting lineup, I'll be lucky if I get playing time." I huff, and she smiles innocently.
"Contrary to popular belief I did work my ass off to get here. I got a full ride not by chance but by bussing my way through tables to afford my privates with trainers so my mom didn't have to struggle to pay rent and get food on the table. Life isn't easy for everyone princess, it's not all Lululemon and Michael Kors purses."
Fire lights behind my eyes, "You know nothing about my family. Yes I come from money but my parents are gone for weeks on end, leaving us with our nanny until we were old enough to take care of ourselves. I barely know who my parents are behind their suits and credit card numbers. I didn't have a rough upbringing, but that doesn't mean I blow my nose with a hundred dollar bills."
"I never said that I-" she starts to say but I ignore her, opening the door to our dorm room and slamming it shut. I'm done.
As I round the corner I hear a ping from my pocket and I open my phone to see a message from Violet. Good luck with the scrimmage today! Kick ass!<3 I smile, sending her a heart before I put my phone back into my pocket.
"I'm digging the fresh kicks, they go great with the new jackets that Nike hooked us up with." Lindy says from outside the coach bus, pointing out my new red dunks that I wore to match with our school colors and maybe bring good luck. "Hey, thanks. My mom bought them as a going away gift for my siblings and I. It happened to be both school's colors were red."
"Niceeee. You want to sit next to me for the ride? I'm probably going to take a nap since it is a three and a half hour drive till we get there." I groan, nodding. "Sure, three hours sound like hell though."
"Could be a 6 hour drive so I take what I can get." she sighs as we take the seats in the back next to Asa and Frankie. I plug in my headphones as Lindy takes out a blanket, cuddling against the wall of the bus. I see Val walk in, sitting directly in front of me right before my eyes close.
the next time they open we're pulling into the parking lot next to the soccer field and I feel a shake go down my spine. " There's no need to be nervous, last season they were a low seat in the conference so this should be a gimme, especially with val on the team." I can feel her smirk all the way behind her seat.
We pile out of the bus, walking across the field and setting out stuff down by the benches before we start warm-ups. Asa and our other goalies take turns in the goal as we practice shots. Before I even know it we're standing by the bench as they announce the starting lineup. First is Lulu, then Parker, both of their green captain bands glowing on their arms. The announcer rattles off a few more names before the last which is Val's. no surprise there
we get possession first, getting the ball towards our opponent's goal and that's the moment I actually realize who is in goal and I feel myself freeze. I must have not been paying enough attention when they announce who Washington State's starting lineup is because who I see in the goal is the last person I want to see in the entire world. Kennedy fucking Wilson.
