Three police officers in Auburn, Alabama were shot late Sunday night. They were shot by Grady Wilkes after responding to a call to a mobile home park. One officer died in the ER and the other two are expected to recover.
The officers responded to a 911 call of domestic disturbance from a mobile home park. When they arrived, Grady Wilkes shot at the officers. The officers were taken to the hospital for treatment. The Opelika/Auburn police departments arrested Grady Wilkes after a search lasting a few hours.
Grady Wilkes is being charged with murder and felony assault. These are considered deviant acts because it goes against what society deems is the right thing to do.
The first theory that could have led him to commit this crime is differential association. In trailer parks, he may been friends with people who are violent to other people or cops. People he know also could have encouraged him to strike out at the officers. The second theory is social bonding. Grady Wilkes might have lacked friends where he lived and so committed a deviant act. If he had a social bond with another adult, they could have prevented him from getting a gun. The third theory is labeling. Trailer parks are often known for being homes to the poor and full of violence. Grady Wilkes embraced the idea of being a criminal and shot the police officers.
