Chap 3: brought back to me

Jaebum lurked in the shadows, the dark his only friend. It was 1916, half way through World War One. He was sent off to battle even though ultimately bullets were useless against him. His father believed blending in was the best way to live, act like them then we all survive. So here he was, sitting in a muddy trench with other humans. His helmet barely fits him, sloppily hanging off the side. His clothes were torn, a disgusting brown with old blood stains from himself and other soldiers. He wasn't really sure what was his or there's anymore.

"Shit I don't think I can do this! I'm scared man, I'm really fucking scared." The withering sound of a fellow soldier pierced the air, his body trembled beside his own.

"We'll be fine Youngjae, we're going to make it. I promised you didn't I?" Jaebum's icy cold hand reaches for his shaky one, tangling their fingers together.

Youngjae took painfully slow breaths, his body fading before his eyes. He was the hollow of a man he once knew, nothing like the Youngjae he meet before all of this, before the war, blood, pain and lose. The war was slowly killing him, taking what little humanity that remained.

"I'm so cold Jae, I don't think I can make it. I'm going to die here." Youngjae's eyes were glass, the moonlight only highlighting the pain inside.

"Don't say that, you are not going to die. I'm not going to let you." Jaebum's fingers run up to rest at his cheek, his piercing blue eyes locking to him.

Youngjae's skin quivered at his touch, lips chapped and broken. He was a mess of a man yet Jaebum looked utterly angelic, not a single scratch on him. The  moment they meet each other they were both captivated. Unable to stay away, desperate for each other. Jaebum never really had a reason to fight this war, that was until a certain man fell into his life. Making his cold, un-beating heart waver ever so slightly.

But that all came crushing down, like a wave to rocks. This feeling love didn't last, it never does for his kind. It was a blessing and a curse, mortality meant you could live for ever but at what cost. Jaebum learnt that cost and it left a scar that would never fade.

"Youngjae! Youngjae!" His arms cradle his limp twitching body, blood oozing out the large hole in the back of his head.

Blood splattered from his lips, slipping down to paint his chin. Jaebum held him against his chest, tears threatening to fall for the first time in his cold hearted life. This was what it felt like, heart break. It was cruel, torture how love brings light, joy to your life then it so easily fades in a blink of an eye. He learnt that day what having a heart meant, how it destroyed you.

From that day on he refused to except love back into his heart. It was only reserved for him, for the one man able to break through his cold appearance.

At least that was the case until a certain boy caught his eye.

Was it him? Was it the Youngjae from his past resurrected?

Was it the gods looking down at him, giving him a second chance by bringing him back. Brought back the only man he's ever loved, so he can prove he's worthy. Worthy of this emotion, of this happiness the feeling brings.

He didn't know but all he knew was the man he found that night, the boy dying the street was exactly like him. Spitting image ripped from his memories, every feature, aspect just how he remembered.

Youngjae was brought back to him and he had to ensure he never lost him again. But his heart wasn't ready yet, couldn't rid him of this cold exterior he's put up for so long. If Youngjae could break through, he could bring him back, get that cold heart beating once again.

A thick glass rested in the palm of his hand, the red liquid swirled around every time he spun the glass. It was the only thing stimulating his mind, the rest lost in the hood of his memories. They smothered him, these past lives he's had which come back to haunt him. Never seeming to disappear or fade the older he gets.

His eyes were stuck on that picture, it cascading his thoughts. He could never bring himself to burn it like he did the others. Whenever one life died and a new one formed he always got rid of the life that died. That part of him was dead so what was the point of reliving it through unwanted pictures or things. But he couldn't do it, burn the last picture of him he had. It was probably the first one he's ever taken. The stupid myth of vampires not being able to get their photo taken was complete nonsense. It purely doesn't make any sense, how would that even work.

The picture held in its dying frame Jaebum in his soldier uniform, jacket open, dog tags hanging from his neck and are rare smiled laced to his lips. Connected to him by the hip was him, his arm resting comfortably on his shoulder. He wore similar clothing though he was in a mere singlet with his own dog tags dangling. His smile was radiated is what Jaebum always thought when he saw it. He has his dog tags somewhere, took them off his cold, blooded corpse. Couldn't bare to part with him, the one thing he's emotionally attached too.

"I miss you Youngjae. You have no idea, I wish I died with you that day." His icy finger traced his picture, hand shaking as he did so.

"I want him to be you, god I hope he's you. He's just like you, not a single thing out of place. But if he isn't I don't think I could take it, he has to be you. My Youngjae, he has to be my Youngjae." It was near his anniversary, this time was always the hardest.

The memories would come, forcing there way inside, shrouding him with nothing but pain. They consumed him, the memories replay over and over again in his head. But this year it was different, the dreams were few, the nightmares almost none. Almost as if the memory was no longer haunting him, eating at him.

Was it because he had finally found him? Found his Youngjae again after years of searching.

If there was a god was he looking down on him, sending his blessing. Releasing him from his chains, from the depths of pity. Allow him the blissful feeling of love again, letting his heart swell with it once again.
