Chapter 1
Daryl's P.O.V.
It was a throat closing, stomach churning, head pounding type of pain. Not to mention the guilt. Oh the guilt. It coursed through me like poison in my veins. I should have done something. I could have done something. Why did I just stand there like a deer in headlights! Why didn't I DO something! These thoughts flooded my brain so that all I could think about was the guilt. As Rick dragged me through the empty hallway, I thought about her last moments.
"Take care of Annabeth."
My mind screamed at the thought. I couldn't protect her, so what makes her think I could protect Annabeth?
*Flashback*
I walked up the stairs down the steps towards the makeshift kitchen area.
"Daryl."
I turned to see who had called my name. I was greeted by eyes. Those vivid green eyes. They seemed as if they could pierced my soul. They were full of worry and sadness.
"Percy."
"I need you to promise me something." he said stepping out of the shadows.
"What?"
"Promise me you will keep Nëraid safe."
"What,why-"
"Just do it for crying out loud!"
"I don't understand-"
"Promise me!" he wailed. Desperation filled his voice.
"Okay! Okay! I promise."
"Thank you."
"Uh, your welcome I guess."
He turned back to the stairs. But quickly turned back around.
"One more thing."
"Ya?"
"Give her this on her birthday."
He handed me a tiny silver box with a blue ribbon holding it together. He walked passed me and out of the prison. I went to my perch and placed it in my bag and quickly went to join the rest if the group by the gate.
He died an hour later.
*End of flashback*
I was dragged along in a stunning silence. As the memory burned through my mind, the guilt became heavier. Like an elephant stepping on my chest. Heavier and heavier it became. When we finally got out of the building, the guilt became so heavy I started to sob. I didn't know what else to do. The rest of the group joined me. When it started to rain, it felt like the heavens themselves felt our loss, and wept with us.
---------------------------------------------
Annabeth let out a wail. It was a heartbroken wail. It made my heart shatter into a million pieces, just listening to it. We just told the rest if the group about what happened. No one said anything because her wail spoke for us all.
---------------------------------------------
"Nëraid was a great person. She wasn't serious unless the situation called for it. She was brave, so brave, for what she did for us. She would have took a bullet for anyone, yet she chose us. She was loyal, so loyal that it brought her downfall. She sacrificed herself for us, so let's not let it go in vain. Rest in peace,Nearid.
When Rick finished he nodded to Nico to begin.
"My cousin was so many things. She was brave, loyal and had a stubborn streak as wide as the Grand Canyon."
He chucked at this.
"She was kind, funny and had a smile bright enough to power the world."
His eyes dropped to the ground.
"Rest in peace cuz, may your smile shine bright in the darkness."
He locked eyes with me. My turn.
"She loved us. All of us. We loved her. She was so hard not to love. She always knew what to say, alway had a smile on her face. She died so we could live to see another day.
But I wish that I could spend it with her."
After I finished I looked to Maggie. Maggie went. Then Glenn. Soon everyone had gone. We all went inside as a group, only a group that had a piece missing from it.
