I loved the library. I would stay in it for hours at a time, just reading books about all the great witches in history. My favorite to read was the story of Tituba. She was the first witch to confess her witchcraft back in the 1690's. I had read about her in school, but the teacher had always told us that witchcraft didn't exist. All that time I had knew that all the accused witches had real power. I wasn't fooled by the lies of public school. I just never knew I would be one of them. After spending time in the library I decided to go to class. Jasmine had told me about where to go for death magic. I was in the class with two other girls. When I walked in they didn't move their head from where they were looking. This was a surprise. I was so used to being stared at whenever I went anywhere.
"They're in a trance" the teacher said barley audibly.
"What should I do then" I said as I walked down the isle of desks. Why were there so many. There isn't even enough people in the Coven to fill all of these desks.
"Join them" she said as she closed her eyes. I might as well try. I sat down in the desk left of a very tall, black girl. I didn't know what to do, so I just closed my eyes. What happened was terrifying. I was put in front of a man. Everywhere else was black. All of a sudden there was a voice in my head.
"Use your gift Cooper. Use it well" it echoed softly. I concentrated as hard as I could, but nothing happened. It spoke again.
"Your power has always been fueled by rage. You must learn to find another source or emotion to draw from" in an instant I was awake and back in the room. I felt exhausted. My head fell forward uncontrollably, straight onto the hardwood.
When I was awake again I was dizzy and nauseous.
"What happened" I asked her.
"Going into trances to strengthen your power takes extreme amounts of energy. You were in that trance for two hours. It was very good for your first trance." She still spoke softly. I walked back to my room to take a long nap. When I wake up it's already past lunchtime. There isn't any food on the table so I grab a lunchable. Since I have nowhere to be I walk around the house. On the second floor are only dorm rooms. All the classrooms are on bass floor. On the third floor are a bunch of locked doors. The one I could open was full of junk and old things. The library is also on this floor. I walk back down the grand staircase to find all the girls standing in a line.
"Come get in line they're taking role" I think it's Natalie that whispers this to me. I walk to the right of the last person in line. Amelia, the headmistress finishes with role, stopping at me to request my presence in her office after we're dismissed. After role is taken, I make my way to her office in the east wing of the base floor.
"Hello Cooper. Now that I finally have a chance to talk to you alone, I want to go over a few house rules." I nod my head "First. Always protect the coven. This means you can never expose another witch. If one witch is exposed, the whole Coven runs a risk of being found and destroyed." The headmistress scared me. She was an old white woman, probably in her sixties. I could feel that she had a lot of power. "Second thing. Never use magic outside of the house. Even in the courtyard. People can see you from there. Third. When you use your magic for defensive or offensive purposes outside of the house m, only perform within your ability. You can't risk passing out in unsafe places." All of this stuff seemed pretty creepy, but I think I could handle it. "There's one more thing I need to tell you before you go in every generation, there is a Supreme. The Supreme is an extremely powerful witch, possessing many different skills in witchcraft. I am the supreme right now. The new one hasn't been discovered yet, but I think it might be you. Only time will tell." I walk out of her office with the word supreme in my head. Jasmine hadn't told me about this. Maybe she was jealous because the headmistress said it wasn't her, and assumed she would say it was me. I don't know who these girls have lived in the house so long. It was so boring.
