The Duchess, the younger sister of the Master, escapes the Time War to Earth while still in her Time Lady form. After spending years there under the alias of Marilyn Jacobs, she and her neighbor Rose Tyler run into the only other survivor of the Time War: her childhood crush, the Doctor.
Soon, the Duchess is brought into the Doctor's mess of life, dragging Rose Tyler along for the ride. The two Time Lords also try to solve the mystery of the Doctor's missing sister, the Scholar, and the Duchess's former husband, the Conqueror... all while the Duchess tries to find it in herself to forgive the Doctor.
