You Promised (Charles POV)

The white lights hung from tree to tree as they illuminated the small square patio behind the mansion. It was almost sundown and the sky was lit with bright golds and yellows.

Tonight was Raven's summer party. She does it every year, and every year the same thing happens. Raven talks to people and has a good time, but I get stuck talking to Hank or sitting awkwardly in the corner.

You see, people just don't want to have a conversation with their professor, and if I'm being honest I don't really want to be there either.

But tonight should be different.

The floor creaked quietly as I walked through the hallway. I stopped at the door and knocked, then heard a faint

"Come in." I slowly pushed the door open. I had no idea how this conversation would play out. It could either go very well or crash and burn.

"Hello Erik," I said stepping into his room, closing the door behind me. My palms were starting to sweat a little. Why? I don't have any reason to be nervous. Do I?

"Hi Charles," Erik muttered. He was sitting contently at his desk. I walked over to him and sat across from him.

"What do you want," he said, not looking up from his writing.

"Well, Raven is having a summer party tonight, and I was wondering if you would be willing to join me." He stopped writing. I could tell he was thinking about it. His mind was giving off a low buzz that was gradually getting louder. I just wanted to take a peek inside. Know what he's really thinking, but I promised Erik I would never do that. So now I have to sit and wait.

He looked up at me and closed his journal.

"You want me to go to a summer party with you?" He asked folding his arms across his chest.

"Well not necessarily," I said, "I want you to come to the party so I have someone to talk to."

"So you're not lonely," he snorted.

"Yes. It gets so boring, and Raven has people to talk to, and I don't like talking to people, so yeah it gets lonely."

"You want me to keep you company at this party where I don't know anyone as well," He huffed, "What so we can both be losers in the corner. Why don't you just not go."

Why did he have to be some damn stubborn! I expected him to be straightforward with me. I just need to know if he wants to come to the stupid party or not.

"I have to go. For Raven's sake, she is my sister and I have to make sacrifices to make her happy. If she wants me to be at her god damn party then I'll go." I was done with this conversation. I got up and started for the door. I felt Erik's mind change from that loud buzz to a softer one.

"Fine. I'll go."

Erik stood up from his chair and came over to me.

"I'll go, but don't expect me to be there for long. There is only so much I can handle."

"Thank you, Erik," I said, and with that, I headed out of his room. The sun was almost fully set and I could hear the music blaring from outside.

"Finally. Where have you been the party's just getting started." Raven came bounding over to me as I emerged for the back door. Many people were already here, and I recognized lots of students had come out to enjoy themselves.

"I was just talking to someone," I said. Raven nodded. She glanced behind me then as fast as she came, she was off. I sighed then walked over to cooler to grab a can of beer. During the beginning part of the party, I normally try to talk to whoever I can, so I don't feel awkward, but tonight the only person I wanted to talk to was inside.

It was starting to feel too crowded where I was standing, so I walked over to the fountain. It was far enough away from all the commotion, but close enough that if someone needed me they could find me. I just wanted to talk to Erik. I could go inside and talk to him, but I already asked him to come to the party, and I feel weird going inside to talk. I don't know why I feel so content with him. It's not like I don't feel that way with other people, It's just, I don't know, something about him that I have yet to figure out.

It was getting late. There was about an hour left of the party, and Erik still hadn't shown his face. I was kinda upset. No scratch that really upset. He said he would come and join me, but he hasn't. For a long time, I was debating on going up to his room and just forcing him to come, but I knew that was a horrible decision. I expected more for him.

"Erik, why do you like to torture me?" I whispered to myself quietly. I shook my head and got up. I didn't feel like sitting and waiting anymore. I was done, I just wanted to be done. I don't care what Raven says, I do this every year for her, I can take a break.

So that's what I did.
