"Get up. I'm gonna get you two in a taxi. Managed to square things with the desk sergeant."
"How nice of you," I muttered, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. I painfully climbed to my feet while Greg laughed disparagingly at the sight of his consulting detective and his fiancee.
"What a couple of lightweights! You couldn't even make it to closing time!" he remarked.
I stretched for a moment before walking past the detective inspector and rubbing my temples at my throbbing headache. Quietly, I politely asked him, "Can you whisper?"
"NOT REALLY!"
I gave him a look of hurt betrayal before leaving the cell. Greg beckoned to Sherlock, who flailed upwards on the bench at the sound of Greg's sudden raised voice.
At the front desk, I muttered a thank you once given my belongings from the night before as Sherlock put on his coat. Clearing my throat, I said to him timidly, "Thanks for the, you know . . . the evening."
We both turned and walked from the desk. "It was awful," he stated.
"Yeah," I agreed, letting out a sigh of relief that he felt the same way. "I was gonna pretend, but it was, truly."
"That woman, Tessa," he muttered.
"What?"
"Dated a ghost. The most interesting case for months. What a wasted opportunity."
"Mediocre, I'd say," I sighed.

"How are you feeling?" asked Mrs. Hudson. I took a sip from my water with the antiacid tablet dissolving in it. "Marriage changes everything, Jane."
"Oh?" I quirked an eyebrow at her sudden change of topic. "Does it, though?" I asked skeptically.
"Yeah." She sat down opposite me. "You might not think it, but it does. It's a different phase in your life. You meet new people because you're a couple, and then you just . . . let your old friends slip away."
"Are you talking about me and Mary? You know it won't be like that."
"Well, if you've found the right one -the person that you click with- it's the best thing in the world."
I smiled at the thought of Sherlock. "Yeah," I said quietly. "I guess it is. Well, I have. I know that I have."
"Oh, I'm sure about that. It's Sherlock, after all!"
"What about you, Mrs. H?"
"Me?" she asked.
"Did you think you'd found the right one when you married Mr. Hudson?"
"No!" she answered, smiling. "It was a whirlwind thing for us. I knew it wouldn't work, but I just got sort of swept along. And then we moved to Florida. Have you ever been?"
"Can't say I have," I said, pursing my lips.
"Oh, well anyway, we had a fantastic time, but of course I didn't know what he was up to." She dropped to a whisper, adding, "The drugs."
"Drugs?" I grimaced at the ongoing pain in my head.
"He was running . . . um, oh god, what do you call it?" She looked at me for an answer. "Um, a . . . cartel. Got in with a really bad crowd. And then I found out about all the other women. I didn't have a clue! So, when he was actually arrested for blowing someone's head off, it was quite a relief, to be honest."
