Steve walks along the hallway, heart thudding. Every crack, scratch, and shape of the facility is so familiar that it makes his heart ache.
Focus, Captain, you're on an important mission here. No dwindling on thoughts. Steve chastises himself. The suitcase in his hand feels too heavy.
He hears the footsteps before he sees the person and stops right at the corner to avoid crashing. However, he forgets that unlike him, whoever it is doesn't have enhanced senses and probably did not detect his footsteps, which is why Steve finds a mess of brown curls slamming into his chest at alarming speed.
"Oof! Shit, sorry Cap, I got a meeting to-Cap?"
Steve stares. He blinks. And stares.
Tony.
Steve's heart does a full-circled flip and just...stops.
It's Tony. Here. Alive. Breathing. In flesh and blood.
Steve can't-he doesn't remember how to breathe.
The suitcase clatters to the floor, disregarded, as he surges forward and pulls Tony tight against his chest, eyes squeezing shut as he inhales the familiar scent of wood and metal; of home.
"God, Tony. I-I'm so sorry. I really am. You have no idea how much I-if we had more time. I'm sorry. I...I love you," he says the last part in a small voice against Tony's shoulder, a confession he makes too late.
"Uh, sure, Cap. Gotta admit it's nice to know you love me but, uh, this is a little concerning. Just a little. What the hell are you sorry for? If this is about the toast you stole from me earlier, I was kidding. And I mean, not that I don't appreciate your hug but we've never really hugged before. Um, well, this is awkward-"
"Please shut up," Steve breathes, squeezing Tony tighter in his arms, clinging for dear life. He only has this moment now. This one chance to touch and see and hear Tony again, and he doesn't want it to end.
He lets go, though, at the end, because it's necessary and inevitable. "I-uh. I'm sorry, Tony. I don't know...don't know what came over me," he says, stumbling over the words.
"Don't worry about it. I love you a lot too, Capsicle."
Steve knows he doesn't mean it that way, but his breath hitches regardless. Tony smiles and claps his shoulder. "Well, I gotta be on my way, I'm already, like, seventeen minutes late to my meeting. See you!" he says cheerfully, turning and continuing down the hall.
"See you," Steve replies, throat dry as he watches Tony's familiar gait, the way his hair parts and his hips sway slightly. So close, yet so far away.
Steve missed his chance in his own timeline, he only hopes he saved it for the Steve in this one.
