"Where are your parents?" he asked suddenly. I almost choked on my apple.
"Excuse me?"
"Most girls have a father or a brother to approve of their dates. Where's yours?" he asked again. I took a minute to compose myself.
"Probably back in Chicago where I left them." I said looking away. I think he could tell that I didn't want to talk about it anymore because he didn't ask.
"And where is your family?" I asked mostly just to get back at him. He shrugged.
"I grew up in foster care."
I felt bad for even asking although it was a fair question. He even started the subject. Still I apologized and promised not to bring it up again for as long as I lived. He just laughed at that.
"Rain, I'll tell you what." he said with a smug smile. I raised an eyebrow at him.
"I will forgive you if you go to that party with me."
