"Do you know how long I've been put through. through all of THIS!? How many people have criticized me for what I am?!" His voice cracked, letting the smallest amount of emotion flow through his calm and menacing act. Connor wasn't that close to him physically, but even he could tell how hurt he was when he spoke.
"I know that! I'm trying t help you, dammit! Ein, please.." He took a pause, either to collect his rushing thoughts or to try and check for a response. "Just.. just let us talk this out. Maybe we can-"
"No! I don't WANT to talk! That's what got me in this, this mess! Trying to stand up for myself even when everyone's already against you. Trying to seek some sort of happiness or hope. A hand to help pull me back up. Someone.. that I thought could be you." Ein looked Connor in the eyes. A since of betrayal swarming in them.
"But all you did was walk away. All you did was make it worse by not saying anything!" Connor took a shaky breath in. Was it.. true? Did he really ignore him? But he still didn't understand. "So I'm going to make sure you're the first one who pays.."
"Ein.."
"Don't try to sympathize with me, Connor! That boat has long sailed."
Connor didn't want to give up. He wanted to help him, even if it was too late. He still cared even if he never showed it.
"What.. What did they say to you that made you think that.. this is a better way.." Careful with what he said, he waited before continuing, "I do know what you went through, first hand, actually. But.. why are you choosing to do this?"
For a moment he really believed he wasn't going to answer him, and for a moment he was right.
Ein looked almost hurt, like he'd been brought back to reality. But the feeling vanished as soon as it came.
"I'd hate to answer a question with a questions.. but do you believe all people are made the same? Hell! Look at your friends! Two demons, a cursed warlock, 5 werewolves.. and then you. A mangy little human that thinks words can pursue someone who out numbers you twice as many times. Do you really think people care about your morals or what will happen to you down the road?"
He was speechless. Ein was right. No one in this world cares. Maybe, just maybe, Ein's right. But something in Connor's mind kept telling him something he couldn't quite hear. Maybe that this was wrong, or maybe neither of them are right. He subsided all the thoughts of whose right or whose wrong. A louder voice echoed in his head, and this time he could hear it better than all the other mashed-together sentences.
"Then let me care." At first he was dumbstruck with his own words.
What kind of cheesy romantic one-liner was that? Connor had thought to himself
Ein seemed caught off guard as well, not being able to keep his shock controlled. How could he? The person he was planning on making his life a living hell just told him that he wanted to care. That there could be a chance to fix this. He couldn't believe that, it was to nice, He didn't want to believe it. All his life he was told he didn't deserve anything. So why is he falling for this so easily. Why is this so different from all the other lies he's been told? Why does he want to believe in it?
Connor was getting anxious, but he tried to keep his cool. For once in his life he regretted wearing a hoodie on such a cold day. Every so often he thinks "How did it ever get to this.. so chaotic and messed up.." He was so deep in thought he could barely keep track of his breathes.
"Stop.. "
He lifted his head to look at Ein, did he mishear him?
"Stop lying to me.." Connor could barely hear him through his cracking voice.
"Dammit! Tell me you're lying!" His sudden mood change was a bit startling. But as angry as he sounded, his voice sounded hurt. It was cracking still, as he could barely hold himself together.
"Tell me.. Tell me that you don't care.." At this point, he couldn't stop himself from crying. The tears were slowly making their way down his face.
"Ein. I'm not... lying to you. Let me help you.." Connor tried to sound convincing, not only to Ein, but to himself. There's a small chance that the rest of the group would understand, but where even are the rest of them? It's only been him and Ein here for hell knows how long.
He was quiet again. What was Ein even contemplating? He wanted help. He wanted someone to talk to, to listen, to be there for once. Why does he have a hard time believing him? His thoughts were swarming his head, he wanted to yell out. He wanted someone to feel safe around. But what was really stopping him?
"You.. you are lying. I know you are." Ein's legs were starting to shake and he was starting to get a headache. He hated this, hated feeling so weak. After so long of becoming this strong and well-put person, only for someone to tear it down. He couldn't tell if he was angry at Connor for lying, for making him seem weak or if he was happy. Happy that this could all end. He asked himself again, why won't I just let him help me?
Connor was waiting, and for what? He could leave, he could never come back and just forget this place. It wasn't hard, especially since Ein hasn't looked up at him for the last five minutes. Why was he here, talking and reasoning.
What seemed like an eternity of silence, Ein looked up at him, pulling on the collar of his shirt for air. His expression was hurt, but it was mixed with something else.
"You want to help.. me?" He looked sincere as he spoke the last word, more calm and understanding. "This isn't some... some sick trick?" He took a shaky inhale and an even shakier exhale.
"It isn't a trick. Just let me help you, to end this."
Hope. That was the mixed emotion. He felt hope that this could end, he could be happy. He could feel a smile, but he didn't want to smile yet, he wasn't sure.
"...if you are lying. I'll-"
"Yeah yeah, you'll kill me. I promise. I'm not lying."
