Oliver's POV: Recap:
I arrive home and see Gerardo step out of his car, while I lead Davie into the apartment. I really hope Jay isn't home yet, that would be awkward. Especially considering I told her I was a cashier at the grocery store. "Ollie! Your home!"
Oliver's POV: Currently:
She runs up to me and I catch her in my arms like a child, but I don't mind. "How was school? Did your math test go okay? I don't need to beat up anyone again, right? Did you handle the stuff for your trip? Are you excited? Nervous?" I ask her, bombarding her with my usual after-school interrogation of how her day went. Instead of being overwhelmed by all my questions she simply giggles at me.
"You worry too much! My day was great, everything is sorted for my trip and I wanted to ask you if I could go to Harley's place tonight so I can help her pack, is that okay?" I nod my head, so she squeals and runs upstairs very excitedly. Then I turn around to face Gerardo and Davie who were standing in the doorway. "Come in and sit down, I'll explain everything," I say to them gesturing to the couch.
Jay comes bouncing down the stairs, her school bag on one shoulder and her duffel bag in her left hand. "Okay, you know the rules. Straight home after school so I know your okay, don't stay up too late, no parties, alcohol, and no drugs," I say, 'Mother Henning' her as she calls it.
I fix her hoodie that she has on, so it's zipped up. "Okay! I know the drill Ollie I'm going to be fine, Harley's mom is waiting downstairs, see you later you mother hen!" She says to me as she walks out of the apartment and gives me a small wave. Still, no acknowledge to the fact that we have guests.
I told Jay when we first ran away from our mother, (that was two years ago) that whenever I have guests over unless I introduce them, I don't like them and not to interact. I've never had people over because I'm constantly working so I don't have the time, but thankfully she remembered what I had said two years ago.
When the apartment door shuts closed, I turn to the stalkers sitting on my couch that have proved themselves pain in my ass. "Okay, before you get any ideas, that was my twin sister Jay. When we were thirteen, we decided to run away from our parent's abusive household. That was two years ago, since then, we've changed our identities completely, so Jay is going to the local high school while I work. But, whenever I can, I read her textbooks that she brings home so I'm still getting an education just not in a classroom. Any questions?" I ask them. Both are star-struck which is funny as hell to look at.
"I don't have a question but, I just want to let you know that you'll forever have a job at the bar as long as you'd like and if you ever need anything, and I mean anything, money, clothes, school supplies for Jay, just tell us and we'll get it for you, alright?" Gerardo says to me, his voice sounding sincere. I nod and mouth a 'thank you.' I'm getting flashes of when we lived back home, so I'm not in any state of mind to talk to them.
"Okay well goodbye, we'll show ourselves out," Davie says, the get up to leave, and Davie kisses my forehead. Which is his way to say, 'I'm sorry I followed you home.' They show themselves out of my apartment and right then I fall to the floor. My head pounding with all the images of my dead mother on the floor. The needle still in her arm and Jay shaking her, 'trying to wake her up,' she said when I asked her what she was doing later.
Flashbacks are common for me, (like every day or every other day) but, luckily, Jay dealt with everything a lot better than what I did. Sometimes when I do something stupid like staying up for hours on end, with no sleep and I forget to eat, she says, 'you got mom's self-destructive tendencies!' Then I retort with, 'well I bet you got dad's patience level, cause mom sure didn't have one.' We never knew our father, our mother said that he walked out when we were babies. We were a regretful one-night stand that didn't have protection.
