“Bye!” Teagan and Sammi shout as I stand up. I guess this isn’t her stop.

“See you tomorrow!” I smile. I make my say to the front of the bus and leave the vehicle. Camden gets off behind me, along with Aliyah Delange, Camilla and Autumn Maciel, and a blonde boy who I’d seen in the hallways.

“Are you that new kid?” he looks at me quizzically.

“Yeah,” I nod. He doesn’t respond.

“Kai, this is Becca,” Camilla Maciel steps into the conversation.

“Cool. Um, I gotta go,” the boy nods and walks away. So that’s Kai Barnes.

“I told you he was an asshole,” Camden smirks once the other guy is out of earshot.

“Camden!” Aliyah gasps.

“What? It’s not like you’ve never sworn before ever,” he just shrugs and looks away from her. “Whatever, I need to go home.”

“Okay. Bye,” she sighs and turns towards me and the Maciels. “Let’s go.”

“Anyways, Becca. How was your first day?” Camilla changes the subject.

“It was fine,” I say. We’re standing in the middle of the street, I realize, but there are no cars coming. Back in Chicago I would be dead if I was standing where I am. But here, it’s strangely safe.

“Who’s your homeroom teacher?” one of the other girls asks. I don’t know who it was. I notice Autumn’s gone inside. That’s not surprising— she’s the youngest kid on our bus.

“Mr. Ralston. Who was yours?” I try to keep the conversation going.

“Mr. Ralston! Tell him I say hi!” Aliyah exclaims.

“You’re so lucky. He’s one of the best teachers for homeroom, and for social studies, but he’s a great homeroom teacher. He literally doesn’t care what you do,” Camilla smiles. “I had Halloran for homeroom. He was okay, I guess.”

“I had Meldrum. Worst homeroom ever,” AAliyah laughs.

“Becca!” I hear someone scream from behind me. I turn around to see Lily standing by the front door.

“Gotta go. I’ll see you guys later,” I sigh, looking towards my eigth grade neighbors.

“Yeah, I should probably go too,” Camilla agrees.

“Same,” adds Aliyah. We say goodbye and leave for our seperate houses. Camilla lives right across the street from me, but Aliyah is farther down the block. As I walk up the pebbled steps towards my home, I let out a long breath. I did it. I’d made it through one day. And so far it looked like I was okay.

A/N

Hey everybody! I decided I'm going to start posting at least once a week, and if I miss one week, I'll post twice the next. I hope you all have been enjoying this.

Question of the Chapter: Camden told Becca that he and Kai were the only other seventh graders on their street. Why didn't he tell her about Teagan, Sammi, and Amy? Did he just forget they were there because he doesn't hang out with them much? Or was he trying to keep her away from them?
