Dust blinded his vision as the blond stumbled through the doorway, his breathing frantic as his heart beat rapidly in his chest. One thing was on his mind as he looked around the room and moved his hand slightly to get rid of the floating dust in the air.
And then he heard it, the soft melodious voice he hadn't heard in years. The same voice that made his heart skip a beat and his whole brain go fuzzy. The same voice that belonged to the woman he loved.
"Steve?"
The blond quickly snapped his head to the side, his eyes latching onto the small figure that was shaking in the corner. His shield fell to the ground in a loud clank, his eyes widening at the sight in front of him. Big brown eyes stared back at him in disbelief as they seemed to drink in his appearance, a look of confusion, sadness, and hurt hidden within.
It took all of Steve's will not to let out a small sob as he whispered out, "Anne?"
He couldn't believe it. After two years, here she was sitting in front of him. He finally had her back. This was the girl who had plagued his thoughts since he first met her back when he was just a kid, the same girl who used to hate him but who now loves him more than anyone ever had. It was Anne. His Anne.
The brunette shook her head, tears filling her eyes as she rested her forehead against her knees. "This isn't real," she muttered, squeezing her eyes shut as if she had a huge headache.
Steve blinked in surprise and found himself moving across the room and over to her. He had to force himself to go slow, not wanting to scare her in her obviously broken state. "What?" Steve questioned as he bent down in front of the girl, his hand hovering out but not touching her.
"This isn't real!" Anne screamed as she looked back up at Steve. She was breathing heavily and it didn't take much for the blond to realize she was hyperventilating. Steve made a move towards her, but Anne screamed out in pain and hugged her knees closer to her body as she leaned against the wall. He quickly withdrew his hand and studied her in silence wondering what was happening.
"This isn't real. It's not real. This isn't real," Anne kept muttering to herself while Steve watched with a broke heart.
What had they done to her?
"Anne, it's me. It's Steve. You're okay now. I'm here," Steve assured her in a soft voice. As if against her better judgement, Anne's breathing slowed down and she let her eyes flicker over to meet his own.
"But you're not," she whispered with a wince as if the words had physically hurt her to say. "This is just Hydra playing tricks on me again and messing with my mind like they always do. It's the damn serum messing with me. You aren't here."
