Anne was struggling with coming to terms with everything that was going on. It was evident in the way she carried herself whenever Steve saw her. It was there in the way she would nervously bite her nails and glance around as she tried to find some sort of familiarity. It was there in the way he would find her staring at herself in the mirror, trying to find a hint of the girl she used to be. It followed her wherever she went and Steve was afraid that she was going to break.
She wouldn't let him see it though. Anne tried to act like everything was fine, not wanting to worry Steve with her problems when he had already adjusted to this new life.
A week passed in which Anne was more closed off than usual, her being more observant than before. Steve didn't know what to do during that week. He had only managed to get out of his slump somewhat because of the Avengers, but there were no impending threats right now so he didn't know what could be that catalyst for Anne.
It didn't help that he was still having trouble himself. Sure he had gotten acclimated to everything, but that didn't mean he was okay with it or that he even understood everything. There were moments where he wanted to break down, where he wanted nothing else than to go back in time to before the ice, where he was with Bucky and Anne and everything was fine and familiar.
Steve let out a sigh as he ran a hand through his hair in frustration. Anne was in the room over messing with a remote as she turned the tv on and off with the same surprised look on her face.
Steve let his eyes flicker over to her and he smiled softly, feeling himself relax as he reminded himself that he was not alone.
A ding from his phone made both him and Anne jump in surprise. Steve was quick to pull his phone out of his pocket while Anne looked at him with wide eyes.
"What did you call that thing again? The device that dinged?" Anne questioned, her gaze on the phone in his hands.
"Oh, um. It's a phone," Steve told her.
"A phone," she whispered in wonder. "I don't understand. It's not connected to anything."
"I know. It's weird," Steve chuckled as he stared at the phone in his hand, flipping it over ra few times as he studied it. "It can fit in our pocket now and we can carry it around without even needing it connected to anything."
"Really?" Anne asked in disbelief. Her nose scrunched up and she slightly shook her head, "That sounds unrealistic."
Steve just chuckled and smiled at her before looking at his phone. His smile faded for a moment before Anne noticed him look up at her. He glanced at the phone one last time before putting it in his pocket and turning to Anne with a smile on his face.
