Chapter VIII
It was 9 p.m. All the girls were in Spencer’s house, sitting in the main room. Spencer’s parents were absent, so the girls were able to discuss all A related things freely.
Spencer was resting her back against the cushion, her laptop on her legs. She opened Google, slowly typing Henry Shepard in the search area. She hit search. A thousands articles and web pages popped on her screen. There were so many things on so many Henry Shepard’s. What were the chances that Spencer was going to find any information about the one they actually needed?
“Anything on Henry?” Aria said, filling her mug with warm coffee.
“That’s the thing; there’s everything on Henry.” Spencer said, scrolling down the page. She double clicked on an article about a student with the same name, who graduated from U Penn, and now has joined a raising awareness campaign about the elephants in Africa.
“Guys, didn’t Ali had a friend who went to U Penn?” Spencer asked.
“I guess,” Emily said. “Remember that one party when that girl fell down the stairs? Alison said that there were a lot of students in U Penn there.”
Spencer faced the laptop screen toward the girls. They were sitting on the opposite couch. “Do you think Ali knew this Henry Shepard? Is this what A is trying to tell us? That he was another fling of hers?”
A picture of a tall, dark-haired boy, with a broad smile on his face, appeared on the screen. Judging by the girls' faces, Spencer figured that they have never seen or heard of Henry Shepard.
“We could be on to something,” Aria said, taking a sip from her mug.
“Or, we could be totally on the wrong track,” Hanna added.
“Pessimistic, much?” Emily said.
“I’m just saying, this is an endless guess. And I don’t feel like guessing no more. Not after tonight’s event.” Hanna crossed her arms.
Spencer looked at Hanna. She was still upset that A almost choked her down. A crossed every line with the girls. Spencer had to figure out the clues and find Ali’s bones. If she didn’t figure out the clues, then who would?
Spencer faced the laptop toward her. “Look, I know that we are all sick and tired. Trust me, I am, too. But, because of tonight’s events, we can’t let A get another win. Not when it comes to this.”
She continued to scroll down the page. Spencer found another article about another Henry Shepard. This was about a sixty year old man in Texas who had twenty snake pets in his house. He claimed that he had million dollars in his bank account by selling the snake’s poison to a Russian mafia. Yeah, definitely not the Henry we are looking, she thought.
Spencer scrolled down to the end of the page. There was an article about a soldier named Henry Shepard. Spencer double clicked on the Wikipedia link. She began reading the biography. It said that the soldier was from Rosewood, and he left to fight in the Second World War, leaving behind his pregnant fiancé behind. He promised to return and marry her, but he died in the war, trying to save five other soldiers from an attack.
Spencer went down to the bottom of the page. It said that Rosewood named a road after Henry Shepard, in honor of his bravery.
“Guys, come here," Spencer said.
The girls jumped from the couch and surrounded Spencer. She pointed with the cursor on the screen, right where it said about the Henry Shepard road.
