Chapter VI

Aria, Hanna, Emily, and Spencer circulated around the table, the clues lying in front of them. The truth was hidden beneath those clues. But how were they going to figure out A’s perverted riddles?

“Who do you think Henry Shepard is?” Hanna asked.

“Another boyfriend of Ali?” Spencer said.

“Let’s hope not. Ian was trouble enough.” Emily said.

“What about under the rug? Is that a metaphor?” Aria shrugged.

“I have no idea,” Spencer walked around. “Henry Shepard, Henry Shepard,” she kept repeating. “Who the hell could that be?”

“We need to take this home and figure them out. I don’t wanna be here anymore.” Emily rubbed her arms.

“Yeah, you’re right,” Spencer looked through the window. No one was near the house. No one was watching them. But A heard every single thing they said. How was that possible?

Spencer looked up. She noticed something strange. There was a hole in the wall, with something placed between inside of it. Something small. Round. Silver. Spencer blinked. It was a camera. That was how A watched them! That was how A listened to their conversations. Sneaky little bustard, she thought.

Spencer turned around. If A was watching them now, she couldn’t react and out herself. But she had to warn the others. She had to outsmart A.

Spencer pulled her phone and started writing a text. A is watching us through a camera in the wall behind me. Don’t react. She pressed send.

All the girls’ phones buzzed. Aria, Hanna, and Emily looked down on their phones, then exchanged confused looks.

Spencer’s phone ringed. She got a text from Hanna. If A is watching us, they are probably in the house. What do we do?

Spencer wrote back. You and Aria go upstairs and check the rooms. Me and Emily will stay here, so we don’t raise suspicions. If A comes downstairs, we’ll corner them.

Hanna wrote back to Spencer. Why should I go upstairs?

Spencer wrote back. Someone has to. Go fast before A figures it out.

Hanna looked up at Aria. She nodded.

“I’m going to go to get some air, outside. Can you join me, Hanna?” Aria said.

“Yeah, sure,” Hanna slowly walked out of the room. Aria followed her.

Emily and Spencer remained alone in the room. There was a long silence before Spencer spoke. “Em, did you ever planned to tell me? About that election thing?”

Emily turned around, facing Spencer. She straightened her body. “I wanted to. Many times. Even that one time when we played Truth or Dare; when you asked me if I have ever done something bad to a friend. I was so tempted to tell you, but Alison gave her that look, the one she had when she knew all of your deepest secrets, I knew I couldn’t.”

“Yeah, I know that look. It still haunts me at times.” Spencer said.

There was another long silence. Spencer didn’t know what to say. Alison obviously played with Emily. But Emily should have done something. Maybe, then, Spencer wouldn’t have been the black sheep in the family, the only one who never got to become the class president.

“I also wanted to tell you about the prank call,” Spencer finally decided to speak. “I felt so stupid afterwards. Like a silly fifth grader.”

“We all do silly things sometimes, no matter the age.” Emily said.

“Well said, Em.” Spencer smiled. She was proud of how much Emily has matured since the days Ali manipulated with her. She was no longer the weakest link of the group. She was the strongest. Even more than Spencer. Going through the grieving process of a girlfriend was something that Spencer couldn’t understand. But it must have been life changing.

“I’m really sorry, Emily. For letting Ali play with you. For letting her play with me.” Spencer said. Spencer hated apologizing, but when she was wrong, she wanted to correct her mistakes. And if that required an apology, so beat it, she thought.

“No, I’m sorry,” Emily point with her finger to herself. “For letting Ali play with you and with me. We were all part of her doll collection. She enjoyed turning one of us against each other.”

A loud scream interrupted Emily’s and Spencer’s conversation. They both jumped off their feet.

Emily gasped. “What was that?”

“Help!” Hanna’s screaming voice echoed from upstairs.

“Somebody helps us!” Aria yelled.

Spencer ran out of the door. Then she stopped, turning back to Emily. “A has them. A is upstairs.”
