Chapter IX

The last time the girls were in the interrogation room, was after the night Alison’s body got stolen. They were called over for questions about their whereabouts that night. All girls said the same thing. That they spend the night in Spencer’s lake house, eating marshmallows and talking about senior years. Most importantly, they said they went to bed early. That was a lie.

That night, they were at Ali’s cemetery. Someone took pictures of them standing over the grave and tried to blackmail them. That was why the girls tried to find Alison’s body before they got framed for stealing it. The girls went together to the police station, but before going there, they agreed on telling the same lie. But this time, they had no time to figure out any kind of lie.

All the girls had their hands on the table. Emily looked up in the mirror. All she saw was her own reflection, along with the ones of the girls. But she knew that the cops were watching them from the other side of the mirror, talking about how guilty they probably were.

Emily shifted uncomfortable in her seat. The girls were alone in the room, trying not to stare at each other. But Wilden was coming any second to question them. They were in really big trouble, and all because of A. A set them up, and they fell in A’s trap like a foul. How stupid they were to think that A was actually helping them?

“How long are we gonna be here?” Hanna asked silently.

“Until my mom comes,” Spencer answered. “She’ll be here any second.”

Spencer called her mother to come and figure out why they were holding them. Spencer told Aria, Hanna, and Emily not to say a word without her mother being present in the room. This was not the first time that Spencer’s mother was going to bail them out of jail. Hopefully, it was going to be the last one. But if those bones were Alison’s, they were going to be lucky to get away with community service again.

The door opened. Detective Wilden swung in.

Emily shifted her gaze to her fingers. She had trouble facing Wilden’s eyes. They always looked so tensed and suspicious. Emily felt like those eyes were looking inside of her, going through all her dirty secrets. It made her stomach spin even more. Wilden sure as hell knew how to intimidate a girl.

“Do you want a cup of coffee? I can get you some.” Wilden asked.

“We’re good.” Spencer said sharply. She was obviously not buying his act.

Wilden started to circle around the girls. “So, tell me, what were you doing in that cabin? How did you get in there?”

None of the girls answered. Emily looked up at Spencer. Spencer had her gaze down. She wasn’t planning on spilling anything.

“It’s better for you if you start talking,” Wilden warned. “It’d hate if you get in more trouble than you already are.”

Emily rubbed her fingers against each other. She wanted to say something, anything that was going to get them out of the mess they were in, and not make it look like they were hiding something. It was easy for Spencer to act tough and stay quiet. She had lawyers for parents. Emily wasn’t that lucky.

“We got an anonymous tip saying that Alison’s body was in there. We found the key under the rug and unlocked the cabin.” Emily said.

“An anonymous tip?” Wilden furrowed. “We were the ones who received an anonymous tip that you four girls were breaking in someone else’s property.”

“We didn’t break in. Not with a bad intention.” Emily shrugged. She turned around, facing Spencer’s what-the-hell-are-you-doing look? She knew she said something she shouldn’t, but someone had to speak up. Emily couldn’t bear to be in that room for much longer. She had had trouble lying the last time she got interrogated about that night-when Ali’s bones were snatched from her grave. She was so drunk that night, making things worse for her and her friends. Emily was now hoping that she wasn’t doing the same.
