Chapter V

It was April, and Easter was days away, when Hanna, Aria, and Alison were in the Art class. They were all demanded to draw something related to the upcoming holiday.

Aria drew a basket with eggs, colored in black and pink stripes, along with an Easter Bunny in the background, dressed in a leather jacket. She thought it looked cool and fun.

Alison was pretending that she was drawing, while in fact, she was texting someone on her phone. It was probably to some guy, Hanna thought. Every new text made her smile. Was Ali in a secret relationship with someone? Hanna didn’t know. Alison knew everyone’s secret, but no one knew her secrets. That was what made her so powerful.

Hanna tried to copy the Easter Bunny she was wearing on her pink sweater, but failed to translate it in the picture. The Easter Bunny she drew looked like a pink Mickey Mouse with long, uneven ears.

“It’s kind of cute,” Aria said to her.

Hanna smiled. “Thanks. I like yours, too. It has an edge.”

“Drawing relaxes me,” Aria moved the brush around the edges of the bunny’s ears. “Especially when I have so much to study. We got a history exam on Tuesday, and I know absolutely nothing. I’m really bad with dates, and I’m afraid I’m going to fail.”

“Maybe Spencer can help you study,” Hanna suggested.

“Yeah, I don’t know if I can sit through that. Spencer loses it when someone asks about a historical event.”

Hanna laughed. She tried correcting the bunny’s ears, but they still looked different in size.

“If I fail in any of my exams, my parents are so not going to let me take that photography class I have been beginning them to let me.” Aria said.

 “That would suck,” Hanna said.

The school bell rang. Alison, Aria, and Hanna headed out of the classroom. Aria said that she was going to the bathroom, while Alison and Hanna headed toward the lockers.

“My Bunny was so horrible!” Hanna complained. “Probably the worst of the class!”

“Who cares, Han? It’s over, forget it.” Alison flipped her hair on the side.

“I was just saying.” Hanna murmured, her head lowered.

Alison opened her locker. She pulled a book out of it, but something else fell out on the ground.

Hanna kneeled down and she picked it up. It was a postcard. Lost Woods Resort, it had written on. Hanna had never heard of it. And judging by the picture of the resort, it didn’t exactly look new.

“What’s this?” Hanna asked. “Are you going to a resort?”

Alison snatched the postcard from her hand. She stuffed it back in her locker. “Um, no, someone gave that postcard to me.”

“Who?” Hanna asked.

“Doesn’t matter,” Alison shrugged. “Anyway, I heard your little talk with Aria. About her not passing the history exam.”

“Yeah, what about it?”

“Her parents are not going to let her take photography lessons. Bad for her, right?”

“Yeah, I guess,” Hanna nodded. Aria's obsession with photography was on another level. Taking that away from her was like taking chocolate chip cookies away from Hanna.
