He was tousled about the cockpit as the autopilot executed its first evasive maneuver. Somehow, he managed to re-fasten his safety harness while his ship weaved through the gigantic boulders floating through space. The asteroids absolutely dwarfed his ship. And although this size discrepancy provided ample avenues for safe passage, the speed he was traveling provided little time for course correction. Any impact would result in instant annihilation.

This harness is pointless.

A large rock zipped above his head; an even larger one zoomed underneath. His ship lurched left to avoid a smaller fragment; re-directed right to avoid another. He then came face to face with a weightless mountain that completely eclipsed the sun. Autopilot took hold and shot him upward with so much thrust that his eye was forced to close. His ship climbed and climbed, and upon reaching the peak, he experienced a moment of weightlessness before a sharp drop forced his eye back open. As he dove, the sun, now roaring with light, illuminated the vast belt of reddish-brown rock that surrounded him.

Almost...out...

Autopilot banked past two colliding stones, and he skirted past the final asteroid with ease.

Out of the cosmic minefield in one piece, he breathed deeply in relief. His ship re-centered onto his solar beacon when all of sudden a tiny pebble ricocheted off of his main window. A small chip dotted the glass in the direct middle of his guiding star.

Aw fuck.
