In a Latin class, after the professor checked the students' attendance, he inquired to the class the reason why the student was absent. One student raised his hand and said, "Sir, baka po kulang sa gaudium [in Latin meaning joy] (Sir, maybe he is lacking in gaudium)." Upon hearing this, the whole class giggled so bad. So the teacher got furious and said, "Kung seryoso, seryoso! Kung gago, gago-gago (If it is a serious thing, then be serious! If it's not, then don't!)"
How many times have we treated a serious matter humorously? And how many times have we watered down a real tremendous case?
In today's gospel about the parable of the sower (Mt. 13: 18-23), we are drawn to understand the value of seriousness. It is when we are serious to value God's word dearly that we can bear fruits that would make a difference in this world. May the seed of God's love for us be nourished and bear abundantly. Amen.
