How many moments have we been entitled to possessions, positions, and relations? How many times have we felt we more deserving than others? And how many instances have we thought we are the only ones to be saved?
If we look at the above mentioned questions, we cannot deny that sometimes we are freakishly proud (to condemn others due to intellectual brilliance, undeniable wealth, and high social standing) or inordinately entitled (to think that one or only a few deserve dignity and right to be saved).
In our gospel today (Mt. 12:1-8), we encounter the proud and entitled actuation of the Pharisees toward Jesus and His disciples only to bang their heads to the most essential thing of the law they missed, that is, mercy. Jesus reminds us that mercy to our fellowmen is more important than any amount of religious sacrifice. May Jesus reign over our proud and entitled hearts. Amen.
