A young religious sister once approached her mother superior and asked, "Mother, how do I manage my anger? This problem is really bugging me." The mother superior replied, "Sister, once the image of the person whom you are mad at appears in your mind in moments of silence, immediately go in front of the mirror and say 'bang!' Surely, that will ease the hatred in your heart." After hearing this, the young sister heeded the mother superior's advice and true enough, she found peace. Then one day when the young sister was walking along the corridor of their convent, she heard a loud and annoying voice and at once, she searched where it came from. And when the young sister peeped into the room of the source of the noise, she found her mother superior rapidly saying, "Bang! Bang! Bang! Ratatatatatatat! Ratatatatat! Pow! Pow!"
Most of us are having a hard time dealing with anger because it is a displeasing feeling that lingers. Whenever we have this kind of emotion, many negative things happen to us. We cannot sleep soundly or or think rightly. We tend to speak harshly, act violently, or worse resort to killings.
In today's gospel episode (Lk 19:45-48), Jesus was enraged with the people who turned the temple into a house of thievery and corruption. Looking deeply at the anger of our Lord, we can reflect that His enactment of rage was a way to correct the people from their unjust deeds and to make them start again in the path of salvation. In the same manner, just like Jesus, may our anger move us to be the voice of those who are unheard and feet of those who are oppressed. Amen.
