________________

Months had passed since he was discharged from the hospital. Zack is going through some books with his grandmother, a former school teacher and vice principal, in the living room. Due to his memory lapse, it was decided that he should continue his study and learning at home.

Before he was released from the hospital it was reported that his ability to store short term memories improved astonishingly, every new experience and events remained. Despite his achievement, it was noted that he shows no recollection of his past memories no matter how hard he tried even with high levels of stimulus and displays some impairment in his intelligence level. Even so, his basic instinct and overall cognitive function was fully intact. Meaning he can perform tasks normally but sometimes with no recognition of how it is done. He can brush his teeth, clothe himself, use cutlery, read, and write with minimal or no difficulty at all.

Zack is reliving his life for the second time, but this time as a full grown eighteen year old. With the help of his parent and other relatives, slowly he recreates his memories through stories and pictures. He suffers strange emotions as he listens to the narrative of his life and sees captured visual evidence in form of pictures and videos. He feels as though he is witnessing another person’s life story.

To him, every person is a stranger, every place is new, every experience is a first and every story about his past isn’t his but faces it with possibilities and wonder, cherishing each moment as much as he can.

Travis and the others have since been busy with school, applying for college and finishing requirements. They continued to visit Zack up until they moved back to his grandparents five months ago. They didn’t know why they have to move away, but thought it must for a good reason.  Zack, losing his memory and moving away left Travis with answered questions. He will never know his past with Zack, or find any closure to the missing part of his memory.  After leaving, Travis was only left with this sudden feeling of longing.

Today Travis is getting ready to go for trip with Trent and Jason to see possible colleges and visit their campus. He’s gathering some items he might need to take with him and unknowingly stumble upon a familiar sketch. He picks it up and looks at it as the only memory of it flashes back. Travis took his time to treasure each detail as he sat down on his bed, still with the portrait in hand.

He can stare at it for a long time and never get bored. It fills his mind with questions, fascination and wonder. He doesn’t know why Zack has this effect on him, that warm feeling every time he thinks of him, which he thought was very weird at first and tried to brush it off, and a smile for every time he sees him. He hopes to feel that way again, too have another glance or encounter even if by chance.

“Trav! come on, Jason is here, let’s go!” shouts Trent

“Coming!”

He glances at the sketch one more time before folding it and placing it in between his DVD collection before heading out the room. He might not remember Zack and the moment they spent together in the pass, but something tells him that no matter what or how it was, he knew for sure that he loved him and that he’ll never forget.
