On a sunny Saturday morning, in her usual baseball tee and jeans, and her hair styled up in a messy ponytail, Grace makes her way to the skatepark on her skateboard along with Spencer, one of her childhood friends who remained in touch, and in fact, pretty close.
"So you're really changing for this boy?" he says kicking the sidewalk pavement, accelerating in the process. "I mean, becoming a different person?"
"I'll be the same Grace, Spencer. Just a little more polite and elegant I guess." She shrugs as they approach the skatepark's metal entrance fence, where she sees the two boys, Scott and Tyler, waiting for them.
A brief "Oh." is all Spencer says, and Grace is bothered by his reply. "Why do you seem so disappointed?" She says with a hint of annoyance in her tone. He shrugs at her and picks up his skateboard and clipping it in between his arm and torso.
"I guess it will just take some getting used to, seeing you in a skirt and a pretty blouse and all." He shrugs and stuffs his hands in his pockets. Grace scoffs. "You think I'm gonna start wearing skirts when I'm with you? In your fucking dreams Spencer." Her fierce answer causes him to laugh.
"There you guys are!" Scott says as he stops leaning on the metal fence. "God knows how long we've been waiting for you." He rolls his eyes and the four of them walk into the park together. Inside, they see a few people doing tricks on their boards and eating snow cones.
"Aye Jason!" Scott calls to one of the boys who just pulled of an outstanding half-pipe. He squints to see who it is but then waves before sprinting towards them. Jason and Scott do a little handshake then turn to the others.
"Guys, this is Jason Ramirez." Scott says and the boy beside him sends a general smile. One by one he introduces the strangers to his three friends.
"Oh yeah I know you." He says smirking towards Grace. "You're the chick that comes here every Saturday morning. You do some killer half-pipes Girl." He winks at her. "Back at ya!" She says, which causes him to chuckle.
When the boys are all trying to perfect their rail grinds, Jason approaches Grace by the snack bar and takes a seat beside her as she watches them skate. "So that's your boyfriend?" He grins, pointing to Spencer.
Grace immediately felt her face turn Red. "Spencer?" She says in shock. "Obviously not, I mean, I love him yeah but not in that way." Grace makes a disgusted face, like an unpleasant taste is in her mouth, causing Jason to chuckle.
"You know those things never last forever." He continues after buying himself a blue snow cone. Grace cocks her eyebrow in curiosity. "Cross-gender friendships I mean. If you guys are the same age, or close at least, then someone is bound to fall in love with the other." He grins to himself as he shoves a spoonful of the delicious treat in his mouth.
"Not Spencer." Grace says surely. "He usually just comes to me for advice on girls, then asks one out like, every month." She scoffs. Spencer wasn't actually a player, because he's never cheated on any girl. However, once he's done with one, he'll move to the next faster than a white girl running into Starbucks.
"Plus I have my eye on someone else." She says to convince him. He merely rolls his eyes and grins, taking a bite of his snowcone.
"Whatever you say."
