blaise watched his chest heave up and down a couple of times before he spoke. "i want to try-," he paused, staring straight up at the ceiling. "i want to try to become friends. i want to start over," he said. he counted his breathing and focused on the ceiling as he waited for an answer.
"i'm up for trying to be friends," hermione replied softly. "me too. i mean, if i'm going to have to live with you and get married to you blaise, better friends then nothing," ginny said.
sitting up, blaise nodded. he looked at draco, but didn't question him. after all, blaise was already friends with draco. if he wanted to make amends with the girls he would do so on his own time. blaise wasn't going to pressure him into it. help him into it? sure. but pressure? no.
"well, maybe we should get going. it's almost seven," ginny noted drawing blaise's attention back to her. "sure," he nodded standing up. the other three copied his motion. "thanks for dropping by," hermione told them as the four made their way to the front door. "cut the formalness," ginny rolled her eyes pulling her bestfriend into a tight hug.
as the two girls hugged blaise pulled his bestfriend in clapping him on the back. "come over soon," draco said as blaise let go. "we will," ginny smirked winking before she motioned blaise out the door. "not you weasley," draco said rolling his eyes, but a small smirk played on his lips. the girl only laughed as she and blaise waved bye before disapperating.
draco's stomach grumbled saving them from what would be an awkward silence. draco flushed staring at the floor as hermione giggled. "c'mon let's see if there's any food in the fridge," she said walking towards the kitchen. when draco made it to the kitchen he found hermione rummaging through the fridge pulling things out. "is salad and chicken okay?" she asked. "sounds good to me," draco replied as he picked up the lettuce she had set on the counter.
he washed the lettuce moving on to wash the tomatoes next. hermione watched from her place at the stove as draco looked through the cabinets for bowls. he was being useful and trying to help her make dinner. her mind wandered back to kingsley's words wondering if draco has actually changed.
she brought herself out of her thoughts and pulled open the cabinet to her right. she saw bowls stacked in one another. laughing, she took two out. "here," she said holding the bowls out. draco scowled, but thanked her as he took the bowls. "i just looked through all of the cabinets and the bowls were in the first one you opened?" draco grumbled as he tossed the lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, and cranberries into the bowls.
hermione laughed as she turn the stove off. "chicken in the salad or on the side?" she said as she begin cutting her chicken into pieces. "in, please" draco replied as he brought the salad bowls over to her. "thanks," she mumbled.
"there's thousand island and ranch in here," draco said as pulled the fridge open. "which one do you want?" "thousand island please," hermione replied taking the bowls to their dining table. he grabbed both bottles from the fridge placing them on the table. they both returned to the kitchen, hermione grabbing forks as draco filled up glasses with water for both of them.
they sat down opposite of each other. they are quietly for a bit before draco broke the silence. "you work in the ministry right?" the brunette nodded, swallowing. "head of magical law enforcement. you also work at the ministry?" "yeah," draco replied. "head of international magical cooperation." "i always thought you'd go into something with potions or work under your father," hermione mused. draco places his fork down, taking a sip of his water before he answered. "potions was interesting, but i think it's more of a side hobby. as for working under my father..." he paused. "well, he's a bastard."
hermione nodded not knowing what to reply to that. draco stood, grabbing both their bowls and headed to the sink. hermione watched as he started to wash the dishes. she got up grabbing the glasses, cleaning the table. she brought them over to the sink where draco took them from her and washed them. "thank you for washing," hermione said as draco placed the washed cup down. "thanks for dinner," he replied.
"well, uhh- goodnight malfoy," hermione stuttered feeling uncomfortable. "night granger," the blond replied as he watched the brunette make her way up the stairs. he waited until she disappeared into her room before making his way up the steps. he went into his bathroom turning the shower on. he let the hot water ease him as he thought about the day.
he had to live with his nemesis since first year while both were committed in relationships. he rubbed his temples as he thought about how bad this could go. maybe if he just limited being around her and talking to her, it would be okay. he shook the thoughts from his head as he got ready for bed, climbing in and drifting off to sleep.
hermione replayed the day in her head as she layed in bed. she looked up at the ceiling. "how could this happen?" she mumbled to herself. this could end so badly. both of us are in relationships, we've never gotten along... "ugh," she sighed as she rolled over, thinking about how to stay away from malfoy as she fell asleep.
