A sudden sharp sting on the side of Petra's face woke her up immediately. Her eyes flew open, finding herself staring directly into Lukas's large, panicked blue eyes.
"The hell!?" Petra gasped, reaching a hand up to her burning cheek as realisation of what had happened suddenly struck her. "Did you just slap me?!"
Lukas let a large breath of relief, reaching both his hands up to stressfully comb his fingers through his blonde hair. Petra, still waiting on a response, had to fight the desire to punch her friend at that moment.
"It worked, thank the lord." Lukas breathed.
"What worked?" Petra asked warily, narrowing her eyes at Lukas.
She glanced around, coming to the realisation that they were at the house... in her bedroom to be exact. She was sitting upright on her bed, Lukas standing in front of her. It was pitch black outside her open bedroom window, the curtains flapping in the breeze coming from outside.
"Okay-" Lukas took a deep breath, taking a seat beside Petra. "What's the last thing you remember?"
Petra blinked a few times in confusion, before trying to recall where she had last been. Now that the sudden burst of adrenaline was wearing off, she was beginning to feel like absolute crap. A headache pounded against the inside of her skull, her stomach uneasy with nausea.
"You saved me from the toxic gas in the lab, dragging me outside." Petra said as her memory came flooding back. "We decided to head home and go back for Jesse later..." Her head shot up, looking at Lukas with wide eyes. "What happened?"
Petra felt something cold press against her hand, glancing down to see it was Rascal's snout. He wagged his tail when she looked at him, jumping up onto the bed. Petra slipped her fingers into Rascal's soft grey fur as he climbed onto her lap with the front half of his body, nuzzling his head into her chest.
"Okay, where do I even start?" Lukas muttered, pulling his hands through his hair again and biting his lip. "We did start heading back, but you weren't feeling well and became increasingly unsteady on your feet."
Petra frowned as she listened to Lukas. She hated the fact that she couldn't remember a sliver of what he was telling her.
"When you collapsed, I had no choice by to carry you the rest of the way." Lukas explained.
"Oh my god, really?" Petra groaned in embarrassment, burying her face into her hands. She was glad she couldn't remember that detail, otherwise she'd probably never live it down.
"It's nothing to be ashamed of, Petra, you were essentially poisoned." Lukas said gently. Petra felt him rest a hand on her back.
"I wasn't even sure you were conscious or not at that point." Lukas went on. "You were coughing uncontrollably the entire time, and it only seemed to get worse. I was admittedly in a bit of a panic."
"Skip the details." Petra said, waving a hand at Lukas. "What happened then?"
"You woke up, or I thought you woke up." Lukas said, scratching the back of his head. "Suddenly the coughing came to an end and you were squirming to get out of my arms-"
"Wait." Petra raised her head, looking at Lukas with wide eyes.
Dots were suddenly connecting, and it made her blood run cold. The blackout, the loss of memory, the coughing, Lukas's slap...
"Please don't tell me what I think you're about to tell me." Petra could hear her own voice quivering as she spoke.
Lukas's eyes were sympathetic, an understanding look resting in his eyes. He gave a small nod, that simple action causing Petra's breath to hitch in her throat. She lowered her head, grasping strands of her short red hair, absolutely hating the sudden weighted feeling in her chest.
