Lukas readjusted the brown paper bag he held under his arm as he walked down the road. Sweat glistened on his skin as a result of the summer heat, strands of his blonde hair sticking the his forehead and neck.
He couldn't wait to get home and collapse onto the couch in their air-conditioned living room. Why did he have to loose that bet against Petra, and end up being the one who had to go out to town?

Chuckling to himself, Lukas just shook his head. He should have known not to make any bets with Petra at that point.

Lukas's train of thought was cut off, something in the distance down the road catching his eye. He squinted slightly, beginning to frown.

A person was running up the road, flat out sprinting. Their face was red, sweat drenching their body. Combat boots kicking up small clouds of dust as their steps thudded against the dirt road. Short red hair flapping behind them, a familiar blue bandanna barely staying on.
A wolf ran alongside them, it's ears pulled back in speed, it's tongue hanging out as it panted.

"Petra?" Lukas asked in surprise as the redhead skidded to a stop in front of him.

Immediately she leaned forward, resting with her hands on her knees and heaving laboured breaths. Her wolf, Rascal, promptly flopped down on the ground beside her, panting tiredly.

"What happened?" Lukas asked Petra worriedly, putting a hand on the exhausted warrior's shoulder.

Concern danced in his blue eyes as he anxiously waited for Petra to catch her breath enough to talk. Why did she come running out here to meet him, in the awful heat at that?

"Here." Lukas said, putting down his bag and fishing out one of the fresh bottles of water he had bought.

Petra gratefully accepted it, thirstily gulping down the cool liquid. Lukas knelt down, offering some of the water in his hands to Rascal as well, which the wolf lapped up instantly.

"Something's wrong with Jesse." Petra said the moment she stopped drinking.

"What?" Lukas asked, his worry instantly building. "What do you mean something's wrong with her? And why did you leave her then? Wait, is she still at home?"

"Hold your horses, geez." Petra breathlessly growled at him. "You know I'm not stupid, if something was wrong with Jesse in the sense that she was sick, I wouldn't just leave her all by herself."

"So what is wrong with her?" Lukas asked, raising an eyebrow suspiciously.

"I don't know." Petra admitted, tugging off her bandanna and using it to wipe the sweat off her face. Her skin was flushed red from the run, almost completely hiding the few freckles that were dotted across her nose. "She's acting... Strange. It's better you see for yourself."

Lukas slowly nodded, feeling his heartbeat start to accelerate. The fact that Petra didn't even know how to explain to him what was wrong with their friend in words, made him even more worried about what could be wrong. It was serious enough to prompt Petra to run all the way out there to get him.

"Come on." Petra's voice snapped Lukas out of his train of thought. She took him by the wrist, tugging on his arm to get him to move. "Let's hurry and get back to her."

Lukas nodded numbly, picking his bag back off the ground. Despite having barely been able to breathe a few minutes ago, Petra had already broken into a jog again. In any other case, Like probably would have refused to run in heat like that. But his worry for Jesse had adrenaline pulsing through his veins, breaking into a jog without even thinking about how hot it was. By the time the house came into view, Lukas, Petra and Rascal were all panting once more.
