Chapter nineteen: Damages
While I waited for Mary to arrive, I did exactly what she had ordered. I stayed inside Mason's house and didn't go out no matter how much Mason and Jax taunted me. At one point Jax went as far as picking me up and tried to carry me outside but I hung onto the door frames and didn't let go until Jax put me back down.
Spending that much time inside made me very irritable and I was at my roommates' throats from the smallest annoyance. Needless to say everyone was very relieved when Mary finally made an appearance. She arrived very early in the morning but because I hadn't slept well since my colossal mistake with Rusty, the sound of a car engine woke me up. I flew to the window and looked down. And there she was. Salvation.
I ran downstairs and on to the yard. "Hi, Mary. I'm sorry, Mary", I breathed out as soon as I was in the hearing range.
She looked at me and sighed. "Oh Harper, what have I gotten you into?" she asked and spread her arms for a hug. She wasn't really a hugger so I jumped at the chance and held her tight.
"I'm so sorry, I should have called you first. He just knows how to mess with my head", I said and I have rarely gotten so close to crying. This was exactly what I was talking about. Alex made me do things, crazy things, that I normally didn't do. Not that crying was crazy but it was just something I didn't do.
"You haven't spoken to either of them since, right?" Mary confirmed.
I nodded eagerly. "Alex has been calling like crazy but I did as you told me and ignored him. He even showed up at the house but Jax made him leave."
"Good. I need you to have a clear head for the first phase of my master plan. First of all you need to hit the road from here. Once the papers get a whiff of your breakup you cannot be living with two boys. I don't care if they are just friends to you", Mary said raising a silencing hand when I opened my mouth to deny it, "the media will twist around until it seems like you're having orgies here."
I nodded. "Okay. I can stay at my grandparents'. But Mary, I don't want to get into a huge public battle. I just want him gone."
Mary gave a pitying look. "Honey, it's too late for modesty. You are trying to break up with Alex Vega and it will not be pretty, no matter what we do."
As much as I wanted to say that she was wrong I knew that she was right. Alex didn't want to let me go and he was much too used to getting everything and everyone he wanted. This would get messy whether I wanted it to or not.

Couple of days passed by. Mary did her best but some evil rumors still got out about the status of my relationship with Alex. Most of them described me as an evil gold digger who had just used Alex for fame and money and was now getting bored. I could practically hear Rusty telling the so-called reporters of those trashy magazines word to word what he wanted them to write. I knew that his plan was to bring me down, destroy me for leaving Alex but I didn't even care anymore. I told myself over and over again that if people were willing to believe what magazines like those had to say about my personality then I didn't want them to buy my books anyway.
But deep in my heart I knew that losing my career would nearly kill me. It was my everything, the very reason as to why I was in this mess.
Mary and I had been apartment hunting all day long with thankfully only Zara Havoc. The other two Mean Girls had apparently had better things to do, thank the Lord. I don't think I would have survived another scene with all three of them. Zara alone was actually pretty tolerable but admittedly pretty sex-crazed. And obsessed with Alex which made things pretty awkward from time to time.
