Chapter twenty - two: Bang Bang
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"Shush", I mumbled at the annoying sound. I squinted my eyes open a bit and glanced at the alarm clock I had bought yesterday because an unfortunate amount of hotel rooms don't have any clocks in them, possibly to enable people to relax better. I had moved out of Mason's awesome house like Mary had told me to and I was more than a little bummed. I missed hanging with him, I even missed Jax. With everything that was going on in my life I hated being alone. I needed my friends but because most of them were guys and I was going through a breakup so I was forced to isolation.
"Argh!" I cried out and picked up the damn phone so it'd stop ringing.
As soon as I picked up, an almost automatic voice announced: "Natalie Victoria Flores Harper, you are coming for a visit this Saturday."
I tried not to groan. It was not that I didn't want to go (well, a little bit of that too since I knew Nana would want an explanation as to why I had left her golden boy Alex) but it had more to with the fact that I was barely awake and she was talking so fast. "Nana, listen..." I tried to mumble but I was caught off quickly.
"No excuses, Harper. You will do this. You owe us at least one visit before you leave. Lord knows you never visit as it is. So while you're this close to us you certainly will come and greet us. Or have we not done the same for you, multiple times, as well, if memory serves", she pointed out. Oh, as if her memory would ever fail her, it wouldn't dare to. And I did want to go to the ranch but I was afraid that the swarm of reporters that was waiting outside here at the hotel Victoria would follow me there.
I sighed. She was right, of course. She is always right and that's what is really scary about her. "What time?" I asked, defeated as I forced myself to a sitting position on the comfortable bed. The sheet stuck to me but otherwise it was a nice bed and I had slept pretty good. Not as good as at Mason's and definitely not as well as I had in my own bed but good nonetheless.
"Six o'clock, sharp. Mason can come too if he has to", Nana said sounding stern but I knew better.
"Why don't you just admit that you love Mason and that you wish he was your grandchild instead of me?" I teased her. Nana had known Mason as long as she had known me, few weeks longer even, and she adored him even though she refused to admit it. I think she was in on mine and Mason's little sketch where we joke around about him being the better twin. We are nearly twins, to be honest. My birthday is February 4th and his is January 22nd.
"That is not true. Your grandfather and I care very deeply for you and for the record, we do not wish any more grandchildren as you are a nuisance enough."
My mouth fell open. "Nana!" I exclaimed. Who knew Nana could throw such shade?
I could practically see her smiling smugly to herself. "See, two can play at this game, Harper. We'll see you on Saturday", she said again and then ended the call. I texted Mason and told him what Nana had said. He replied with this: Damn, Nana got game. Don't know if I can come Sat, tho. Might fly to Kenya.
I called him straight away. "You what?" I blurted out as soon as he picked up.
"Enough with the screeching, Harpy. But yeah. I miss Annie and I want to see her."
"Have you told her about the flight? You know, she might be busy", I tried to say very carefully. Sometimes Mason acts before he thinks (okay, fine, he always acts before he thinks) and it was my job to make sure he didn't mess up too bad when he did do something rash.
