Gaster is soo out of character and I'm so sorry for this but it's really important he's the way he is because spoiler alert he helps make a few conflicts that i need so the story actually has things happening.
Sans woke in a cold sweat, his hand already gripping his shirt where the skeletons soul was. He was frightened beyond what he'd ever expected coming to the surface, his breathing fast and Sans found it difficult to calm himself with the usual tricks he used to do whenever he woke scared.
Check the area.
Calm yourself.
Check your soul.
The monster always found that the soft glow from his very existence in his hand made him feel strangely relaxed. Not to mention the warmth it gave off to his hand made him put his face closer, as if it were a fire in a place so cold. Who cared how hot it was it felt nice.
It was actually strange now that he was thinking, awake and obviously calmer, it'd been so long since the monster had ever been so scared, but the dream had already faded from his memory into the back of his mind. Usually when he was frightened badly he'd be stuck on it for so long. Now, Sans was fine. The fear gone as quickly as it came.
He swore he was scared. Shit, he'd been terrified. Maybe so scared his brain might have actually forced the dream to disappear and yet, Sans was sad it left. He wanted to know what spooked himself so badly.
A little irritated, the skeleton stood from his mattress covered in sweaty blankets and glanced to the window. It was still night, though he wouldn't exactly say "dark," as the moon shined brightly through his window casting a ray of light on the ground, and the stars twinkled in the sky happily with no clouds around to block their bright smiles from the earth.
It was beautiful outside; peaceful and calm. So nice it made Sans open his window and almost even want to go on a walk. He'd only shake the idea from his head, but he still felt himself consider the option.
Sans left his room shutting the door softly. The house was the same from underground. Exact layout and all which for a moment made the monster become confused where he was exactly.
Gaster was awake.
He was on the couch, a smile plastered to his face as he read a letter. Sans leaned against the stair railing, "Whatcha got there?"
Gaster didn't look up to his son. "Oh Sans the humans are absolutely hilarious! Some of their ideas are so small and cute." As the monster slouched back on the couch smiling wider, Sans rolled his eyes. "Do we have any ketchup in the fridge?" He asked trying to ignore the conversation his father was trying to have with him. Ever since Gaster came back Sans had found it was becoming difficult to get along with him. His father always talking about how amazing the humans are and even telling Sans to come to work with him and Alphys to meet a few. Of course the skeleton refused getting a bit upset by the idea.
His father looked up at the skeleton still leaning against the stair rails. "Yes and Sans I think-"
"Great." Sans teleported away to the kitchen. The house downstairs was a bit different with a door under the stairs to a bathroom none of the skeletons in the household used, and another door to Gaster room, which also led to the small lab out back. Thankfully Sans guessed right and blinked to find a swirling in his stomach and the fridge door just in front of him. Actually right in front of him, so close he could just move his skull a bit forward to touch it.
A soft sigh came from the living room as Sans collected himself making sure to grab a bottle of ketchup. He was a little hungry as well though nothing looked pleasing in the refrigerator at the moment. He kinda wanted nice cream.
"Sans, please stop doing that. I only want you to maybe try and be nice to the humans." Gaster rounded the corner into the kitchen finding Sans shoulders drop after he shut the fridge.
The skeleton turned to his father, "I just don't like them, do we have any nice cream?"
That only earned a frown from the taller monster in front of him. "Sans you could at least try. They really are nice once you get to know them." Gaster pushed and the smaller skeleton shook his head.
"No, Dad," He was getting tired of being told to get along with the humans. Gaster always came back talking and talking about how amazing they were but not realizing some of things he was saying to his children were actually just him getting heavily manipulated. The worst part was that most the monsters were actually with Gaster in trusting and believing everything the humans say. Sans knew in some points he was wrong and some humans were actually nice but he hadn't met any and he hated going to their part of the city because all they did was whisper about monsters. They also didn't even bother to be quiet about it.
"I'm tired of having this conversation. I obviously don't like them. Thankfully I don't even have to converse with them so please leave me alone about the subject."
Gaster stared, his face hardened a little, "Sans your not even hearing them out though. You refuse to even acknowledge their presence," Gaster frowned more though lightened up a little as he spoke again, "Okay right now you don't like them but compared to us their technology is so little. Sans they would love your ideas, it was thanks to you that I developed the-"
"Don't even mention that machine. It got you killed."
There was a bit of silence as the two monsters remembered the traumatizing experience. Sans never forgave himself. It really had been more of a mess than if Gaster had just died. But it couldn't be simple and instead Sans was the only one left to remember his father. The Royal Scientist.
Sans had no one to talk to about Gaster and it scared him beyond anything he'd ever been scared of before. He couldn't imagine what it had been like for his father, being stuck in a world where it seemed everything mattered on his ideas and inventions, but now he was left struck with the reality he truly wasn't that important and he'd never be able to interact with anyone.
"We talked about this. No one remembers forgetting about me and that's how we need to act." Gaster said in a low voice his gaze lowered to the ground. Sans felt regret creeping up his spine like a spider. It really was best they'd leave that moment behind. It was hard for them both at the start because holy shit Gaster was back. Sans thought he could never stop thanking Frisk. But now staring at the man in front of him in the brightly lit kitchen, the light of dawn now peeking in the sky out of the windows in the living room brightening the whole house, Sans almost felt strangely ashamed to have thanked the human so much.
"Then lets just pretend this conversation never happened. Papyrus should be up soon." Sans knew very well Gaster would bring up the humans again to his oldest son. He knew his father would urge his son to help the humans invent amazing things that would help them incredibly, but Sans would just have to push his fathers wishes off. He wasn't a scientist anymore and why should the skeleton try to build up more friendships that he already could tell he didn't want to keep.
Walking around his father, Sans kept his gaze low trying to make eye contact with his father.
"Frisk wanted to come see you and Papyrus. She'll be here in a while after I leave for work." Gaster's voice called as Sans slowly walked up the stairs. It sounded as if they hadn't even argued a bit. "Alright." Sans only called back in the same pretending voice he put on everyday. It wasn't even pretend anymore, it just felt so natural now.
He didn't even like acting like this. As if nothing had ever happened. But he continued to keep it this way. Because it was better.
