- So this is it? - Liam voiced, curled against the sandy ground, his body pressed to the hundreds of soldiers that froze in their positions.
His back faced the field and the curiosity and fear of the upcoming nightmare that would get unrevealed if he turned around corrupted him. There, on the opposite side, stood the army of the enemy, ready to kill them like a jar of helpless ants. Everybody waited. Just waited for death, as there was nothing else they could do. Sit, wait, and now, run and die! His arm brushed over Louis' bicep and he noticed how unstable he was in comparison with the elder soldier.
- Calm down, Liam. We'll be fine. - Louis whispered but avoided his eyes.
When he turned his face and they finally looked at each other he sighed.
- Okay, I can't promise you that. Look, most of us might not make it to the end but think about it. If you knew this were the last ten minutes of your life would you waste it on pitying and panicking? Death is the logical conclusion to everything. Sooner or later it will come after everybody. And you're not a child anymore, you can't pretend like it doesn't exist.
Oddly, Louis' honesty seemed to help and all Liam could do was nod and lean against the ground. He looked at Louis and noticed him staring at the spot occupied by Zayn and Harry. Harry's eyes were closed but Zayn's were concentrated at something Liam couldn't see. And he only realized that everybody was taking their time to mentally say goodbye to the dearest things.
- What are you thinking about? - he asked Louis.
The other soldier chuckled and turned to him.
- Are you sure you wanna know that? I'm just imagining a huge award in front of millions of people and with someone special in the audience. - he said dreamily, unaware of his eyes roaming back to the same spot. - What about you? What's your "last thought?" Or "last wish" as they call it.
Liam thought about it for a moment and grinned while softly bumping their shoulders together.
- Getting one last advice from the wisest guy I know.
Louis looked around and pointed at himself, raising his eyebrow and trying to look as funny as possible. Liam giggled and nodded encouragingly, forgetting about the horror behind his back for a moment.
- That's not fair! Yours is real! - Louis whined dramatically and ignored the weird looks they got from the other soldiers around them.
That's when they all fell into a long triggering silence, just waiting for everything to begin. Zayn's eyes were still pierced at the opposite side of the field. Harry was looking around carefully, and Niall crawled from his spot to be closer to the boys. Only Liam and Louis didn't seem bothered anymore. Louis looked down at him and smiled.
- Are you feeling better? - he whispered.
Liam nodded and even without his answer Louis could see how calm he was unlike earlier.
- Just stay close to one of us all the time and be careful, okay? We'll make it. - he winked and looked up when they heard the loud whistle.
Zayn and Harry were the first ones running forwards and calling the others. Before Liam could follow them Louis was right in front of him, keeping him away from the middle, most horrific part of the battlefield. But only a few seconds later it was impossible to do, as the exploding weapons caused clouds of dust and fog, and the guys lost each other, all of them being thrown to different parts of the roaring chaos. Each second dozens of soldiers fell down, taking their very last breath. The dust moisturized Liam's eyes, who clung to the gun in his hands and ran forward, not finding Louis anywhere near him. Young men fell down one after the other, as the bullets coming from the heavy gun machines from the other side pierced through their flesh and filled the air with their horrid screams and waves of blood.
