"Lily!" The man shouted. "Lily!"
"Yea" Lily spoke back as she walked closer to the voice until she was in the same room.
"Lily, I'm driving your mother to the airport and traffic is probably going to be crazy so you, Jacob and David just eat whatever you can find in the frig."
"Who are Jacob and David you speak of?" Lily asked with a smirk on her face.
"Lily I don't have time for this I need to leave. I love you."
"Love you too dad." Lily stayed back.
Lily walked to the kitchen as she heard her father close the door. The clock on the stove read 4:45. Which meant her brothers Jacob and David should be home with in an hour from work and soccer practice, respectively. As she opened the refrigerator to look for something to eat her phone buzzed. She reached into her pocket to see a message from her mother.
Lily make sure you behave while I'm gone and don't forget to prepare for school to start. Please clean your room. It looks disastrous -Mom
Lily huffed and rolled her eyes as she finished reading the message. So typically of her mother to text a list of things to do without having said goodbye. She didn't think anymore of it and texted back okay and shoved the phone in her back pocket.
Lily found a pizza pocket and put in the microwave to heat up. After two minutes she took the hot plate out and plopped on the couch. She turned on the tv to a game show and ate her pizza pocket only to fall asleep before she finished her food.A loud slam and voices woke her up from her sleep. She shifted on the couch and pulled out her phone. 5:30. She took the last few bites of her now cold food as she heard the voices come closer.
"Dude. Go shower." One voice said.
"I need to call dibs on food before you and Lil eat it all." The second voice said.
"I already ate." Lily chimes in the couch.
"Oh shit. I didn't see you." Jacob asked while he plumaged through the refrigerator. "How was your day?"
"Eh." She replied.
"Did pops say when he was gonna come back?" David asked.
"No just said something about traffic." Lily said now sitting up looking back at the boys in the kitchen.
Jacob had three different meal options in front of him and would probably end up eating all three. Almost everyday after soccer practice he comes home and eats a buttload of food."Don't eat my food. This is my food." Jacob said with food already in his mouth. "I'm gonna take a quick shower. Don't eat it!"
"Nobody wants your damn tater tots." David snickered. He grabbed a soda and sat down in the couch with Lily.
David was the oldest of the three siblings and in his second year of college. He had opted to stay home instead of being at the dorms so he could stay focused. He also worked part time at a book store right next to where his girlfriend Celia.
"So how are feeling about going into your senior year?" David questioned Lily.
"Am I suppose to feel a certain way." Lily retorted.
"I mean last year of school. Grad night. Prom."
"I feel nothing."
Lily didn't care to much about school although she excelled at it. The academic things came easy to her. She just didn't care to much for the social aspect of it. She wasn't popular but she wasn't unpopular.
Jacob grabbed his food and sat on the couch with water still dripping from his hair. Lily looked at all the food he had brought with him including a glass of chocolate milk."Is that chocolate milk?" Lily asked and Jacob shook his head yes.
"What are you twelve?" David chimed in which made Lily chuckled.
"And still getting more play than you." Jacob shot back.
"Bro I'm in a committed relationship."
"I rest my case." Jacob laughed.
"Whatever." David said. "When is mom suppose to be coming back?"
"After school starts." Lily said while she looked at her phone.
"Hand me the remote." Jacob asked. Lily tossed him the remote.
The siblings all sat on the couch switching back and forth from watching the televisions and their phones only to get up for something to drink or use the restroom. Lily was about to drift off to sleep but heard the key in the lock.
"I'm home!" Their father shouted and closed the door behind him.
"Ay!" The boys shouted in unison.
"Where's Lily?"
"She is on the couch with us." Lily rolled her eyes and David responded to their father.
Lily's family were were more on the strict side when it came to her because of past events. Although because she was entering into her senior year they had began to loosen their reigns a bit.
Their father walked into the living room and stood behind Lily. He took off his jacket and laid it on the couch. He placed a kiss on top of Lily's head. She looked up at her father and gave him a half smile.
"What do you kids have planned for tomorrow?" He asked and walked to the refrigerator.
"I'm taking Celia out tomorrow after work."
"Nothing pop." Jacob sighed.
There was bit of silence before Lily replied. "I am suppose to go out with Jasmine to buy some clothes for school. But I don't know if I wanna go anymore."
"No no go Lily. You should go. You should get out of the house you have been in the house since summer started. You need to rebuild...yes rebuild the friendships that you have." Her dad stated as he made himself a plate of food. "So you learn to foster healthy relationships.""Oh. That's crazy I could have sworn mom went to the airport. But it sounds like she is in the kitchen." Lily noted.
"Mom was probably coaching him in the car." David laughed.
"Excuse me. I speak for myself. I don't need your mother to coach me on how to parent." Her father stated. Lily twisted around and stared at him.
"Okay. Yes your mother had somethings to say in the car. But you do need to get out of the house Lily."
The whole living room filled with laughter. Their father was intelligent and loving but when it came to parenting he let his counterpart take the lead.
"Right. Well I'm off to bed. So I can be fully rested so I can learn to foster healthy relationships." Lily snorted.
