Even the Devil was once an Angel

Lucifer looked up into Sam's eyes noting the difference in her attitude. She was suddenly alive, determined, he wondered how his fall had somehow been the tinder to light the fire of hope inside her grief stricken soul. How was it that, he of all people was the one to reawaken Sam's drowned spirit? He coughed slightly, clearing his throat. "You expect me to change? How can i change? I'm the devil!" he screamed, voice rasping causing Sam to instinctively recoil "I'm evil, thats who i am! Who i've always been! I can't change, i've tried!" his sudden rage guttered like a candle in a breeze, his words becoming tight as he resisted the urge to sob. Eyes glowing a piercing blue he scowled at Sam.

She seemingly ignored Lucifer's outburst, picking up a bundle of something from the floor and moving slowly behind him. Lucifer flinched as he gently put a warm hand on his left wing joint. Tentatively, she began to wind a white gauze bandage round one of the wounds, protecting and stabilizing it from further harm. "Let me tell you a story" she said slowly. "Once upon a time, there were two siblings- a girl and a boy. They were born to battle the dark, learning the tricks of the trade from their father, a family business. It had never been an easy life, a life filled with monsters and ghouls. But it had been bearable. But eventually, one by one their loved ones, friends, lovers, dropped dead like flies, as the darkness crawled closer around them. But they always had each other. Together. Always." Sam moved to another wound, gently mending what was broken. "Until one day, the sister gave in to the darkness, letting it manifest in her very blood. Believing that it was always her fait to fall like a hero of one of the great tragedies, for she had never been clean after all." Sam paused, gathering herself. "But the sister was blind. So blind. For the brother was becoming a martyr before her very eyes, carrying a burden too heavy, a mark to great....he fell to the darkness completely." She stopped again, rubbing her temples in an attempt to stave off a headache. Then, slowly she stroked Luifer's wings, letting herself momentarily forget the past, focusing on the velvety black feathers. Lucifer tensed slightly, never before having received any affection without it including a price or some  horrific task completed in order to gain attention. "How does the story end?" he asked. Sam smiled to herself, not quiet believing what she was about to do. "I believe the story ends with the sister meeting a fallen angel. A fallen angel who had also lost the way back to the light." Ever so slowly she moved her hands up from his wings to his matted brown hair, running it between her fingers, gradually untangling it. Lucifer relaxed his shoulders slightly. "And then, the angel and the hunter held hands"  She took his cold hand in hers, fingers laced together perfectly. "and they walked through the darkness together, holding each other out of the worst of the darkness." She moved around to see his face, kneeling before him. Lucifer had his eyes closed. " And then" she said, touching the small pink scar in the shape of a pitchfork on his forearm and tracing it with a single finger. "and then eventually ....they found the light"  Lucifer opened his eyes, blazing with  an unnatural angelic blue. "But.. this will only be the end of the story if you pick up the pen now. If you decide to walk with me" she said, her words were quick and uncertain betraying her fear of rejection.

"And if" Lucifer said "if i walk with you. You promise we will reach the light?"

"I promise" said Sam. Then, after a short pause, she reached round to the back of her neck and undid a small clasp, undoing a necklace that hung hidden in her shirt. Silently she brought it out, holding it so Lucifer could take it, letting the charm hang in the space between them. It was a small golden face with horns, the same amulet that had hung around Dean's neck in hell itself. The thing was charred, scuffed, broken, but still held an overwhelming symbolic presence of Sam's love for her brother. Lucifer was aware of the significance of this gesture having been in Sam's head.

"You want me to...to have it?" he asked

"Yes. To symbolize our promise." She replied firmly

Slowly Lucifer reached out to take it, they briefly held the amulet together, hands unified over the small thing that was an embodiment of their new hope, and then he took it and fastened it around his own neck. Sam stood up and back a few paces, inspecting who she suddenly recognized as her savior. He was going to help her and her in return help him. It might work. Hope welled inside her, suddenly she had a purpose, suddenly she didn't need to send the tear stained note that was hidden in the bottom of her drawer. Life was hers for the taking again. And in this revelation she surged forwards, wrapping her arms around Lucifer, her fallen angel. Feeling him jolt in shock at her sudden hug, she whispered in his ear.

"Together. Always"

And gently, uncertainly, she felt him return her embrace.
