Wrestle your Demons

Sam felt a wild panic rising in her chest and barely had time to glance at Lucifer, eyes wide in the darkness, before the sharp crack of the front door being smashed in could be heard. Lucifer stared back, frozen with panic- what could they do?

Thump, thump, thump went Dean's heavy boots as he pounded up the stairs.

Lucifer launched himself over to the door, holding it shut with all his weight. "I know you're in here!" yelled Dean in fury.  Sam clenched her hand over her mouth to keep herself from making a sound. All was silent for a while, the only sound was the frantic beating of their hearts and their shallow, panicky breaths.

Suddenly the door jolted violently, causing Lucifer to be pushed back slightly before he regained his balance. "Ah!" came a shout from outside the bedroom, which quickly turned into a low growl. "There you are." The door jolted even more violently, this time Lucifer was ready and leaned into the push. The door stood firm. "Fine." said Dean menacingly "We have to do things the hard way."

Sam's heart stopped as a small axe hit the door with a low thunk, its blade skimming Lucifer's ear- an inch away from hitting his skull. Scarlet blood to dripped slowly onto the filthy carpet. Lucifer gave a low moan, betraying his present's. The axe was withdrawn swiftly and then, before either of them could think, the door was in pieces and a dark silhouette entered the room. Lucifer was pushed back over to the corner of the room, holding Sam protectively in his arms.

Dean raised his head, his black eyes reflecting the moonlight poring into the room through the tattered curtains. Sam could tell immediately that this was not remotely like the Dean she had known all her life. This wasn't her brother. "So." said the demon. "I see we are not alone" he snarled, pacing the room.

"Leave us alone" thundered Lucifer, his eyes glowing deep blue, his wings outstretched and threatening.

Dean chuckled. "well, well, well. Little Sammy and the Devil seem to have made up." He smiled wickedly. "And..." he paused taking a deep breath through his nose "You both reek of demon blood...what have you been up to while i've been away little sis?"

"Nothing concerning you." Sam spat defensively, "Don't you come any closer, or i'll be forced to...forced to kill you."

Dean laughed, a haunting sound of demonic glee. "We both know you won't do that. You couldn't hurt your poor weight-of-the-world brother...could you?" He turned to address Lucifer "And you? What do you want with Sam? She is your true vessel. Come to claim the prize?"

Lucifer's eyes widened and he glanced at Sam quickly. "No! No, i would never do that!, its a misunderstanding!" Seeing the guilt in Lucifer's eyes, Sam wrested his arm aside and stumbled into the space between the two of them.

"What?! How could you do this!" Sam shouted at Lucifer, "i trusted you. I helped you, and all you wanted is me, as a meat suit, your docile little puppet!" She saw red as rage consumed her.

Dean laughed again, louder this time, causing goosebumps to appear on Sam's arms. "No, no i never intended this, i never meant.." Lucifer tried to justify himself but Sam wasn't listening. Blind to her surroundings, she continued to scream at Lucifer in wild anger, ignoring the fact that a demon stood behind her, abandoning every hunters instinct in favour of pulling down the lies of who she had thought was her saviour.. Lucifer's eyes caught movement behind Sam, a flash as the moonlight caught the silver on a small dagger Dean was drawing from his jacket.

"Sam!" shouted Lucifer, his cry only met by a stream of abuse. Seeing no alternative, he darted forward and into the space between Sam and Dean, just as Dean thrust the dagger- planting it solidly into Lucifer's chest.

Lucifer gasped softly as dark blood started to bloom onto his t-shirt, he fell heavily into Sam's arms, shuttering violently. Sam was silenced, eyes wide and mouth open as she realized what Lucifer had done. How blind, how stupid she had been.  Dean's eyes shone black, his laughter breaking the tense silence.

"Hold..my..hand. Brace yourself." Lucifer whispered weakly into Sam's ear. Confused, she took his hand, interwining her fingers with his. Immediately his eyes shone, a small light radiating from what was left of his grace. Opening his wings to full capacity, the bandages Sam had carefully applied, unraveled, revealing the dull shine of bone and thick scabs. He shot upwards, breaking the ceiling with his head and shielding her from most of the debry.  She was flung into a world of disorientation.

Lucifer's flight was awful. Speeding to an unknown destination, colours blurring and gusts of ripping tears from her eyes. He fell several times, gliding on broken wings to save them from hitting the floor. Sam was hugging Lucifer's waist tightly but her hold was quickly becoming precarious as her hands become slippery from blood.

"Lucifer!" she called, her words torn from her mouth by the wind. "I can't..can't hold on anymore!" she screamed trying desperately to reach him as her fingers loosened one by one. Lucifer remained oblivious, his eyes set on a shaky horizon, bleeding from so many places, it was only adrenalin that kept him aloft.

Her hand slipped, and she slid down a little grabbing his belt, Sam now hung loose hitting objects in their path with force.  The shift in her weight and drag caused by her dangling body caused Lucifer to glance down- realizing in shock what was happening, he fell into a  break-neck nose dive. Sam let go as they were nearing the ground, Lucifer spun round, throwing himself off-balance in a desperate attempt to grab her. All he achieved was to land backwards, hitting his head and rendering himself unconscious.  Like a comet, the fallen angel tumbled down for a second time.

The dust cleared slowly.

Sam blinked. Her body burning as the sun attacked her with a vengeance. Opening her eyes slowly, she was greeted by a huge yellow expanse. Moving her head slowly, the ground shifted underneath, like...like sand.

They had landed in a desert.

Sam came back to consciousness in slow starts, like a fish rising to a baited hook with slow circling and tiny nibbles, till at last it struck and she, just like that hooked fish, was hauled out of comforting darkness and into harsh light. She lay still until she could no longer stand the heat of the sun against her battered frame. Pulling herself to her feet, she discovered she had become a giant walking bruise. Almost every part of her skin was blotched with deep purple and blue. Ignoring this fact, she glanced around, hand above her eyebrows, acting as visor against the glair.

It wasn't hard to spot, a long trough in the sand leading to a huge Crater pinpointed where the angel had fallen. Stumbling over and into the dip, Sam knelt down and cradled Lucifer's head as the sun beat down like an angry eye.

"Luci?" she asked tentatively. "Luci!?" she shook him slightly in growing concern. He didn't stir. Black blood pooled on the sand, weeping from the wound in his chest, his wings and various cuts on his face and arms.

She hoped desperately that he hadn't hit his head.

Jamming her fingers under his chin she checked gravely for a pulse. It was there, weak and intermittent. Her angel still lived.

Holding his broken body against her, she looked around again- searching for shelter. To the left, in the side of a momentous sand dune, was a small doorway made of sun bleached wood. The mouth of the dwelling was covered by a stained piece of plastic that was flapping slowly in the hot breeze. Sighing with relief, Sam dragged Lucifer over to the shelter. As she neared the entrance she saw a dark pitchfork symbol burned into the wood. This place was of Lucifer's making.

She hauled him through and into the cool shade. But her respite was short lived.

Crammed into the small room were thousands apon thousands of weathered CCTV pictures of her and Dean, covered in annotations written in blood.

Taking a step back, the sharp crack of a skull breaking made her jump, glancing down she gasped in horror to find the floor littered with skulls, most of them human.

This place was a grave.
