Chapter 25: One and Only

I was in a garden filled with roses, lilies, and daisies. It was a sunny day and I could see that the flowers were in bloom. I reached down and picked a rose from the abundant of red roses. I smelled the sweet scent and was admired.

This place is peaceful. It is the calmest I've felt in a long time. All the stress that is on me was lifted off my shoulders. My life was filled with...happiness. This a feeling that I haven't felt in a very long time. I could live in this place forever.

I suddenly felt a cold substance on my hands. I released the rose that was in my hands, the rose falling to the ground.

My hands were covered in blood. For a moment, it didn't bother me that blood filled the palm of my hands. Then, it was like a gust of wind knocked me down off my feet. The blood began pouring down my wrist and onto the flowers below. I tried to scream, but every time I tried nothing came out.

Then, a bright light was shone in my eyes. I squinted my eyes, but I saw nothing. I blinked my eyes a couple times. The images around me were starting to become more clear.

I was in a bed...in a hospital? Derrick hovered over me as he tugged a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "Hey muffin." he whispered.

I tried to respond but my mouth was too dry. "What? Whats wrong, Ali." Derrick said in a panic. I pointed to the glass and pitcher of water. He immediately understood and pored me a glass of water with a straw. He held the glass up to my chin as I drank from the straw. "Thanks." I said. "What happened? Why am I here?"

"Do you remember?" he asked. I shook my head. He opened his mouth to speak but a knock interrupted him.

A man came into the room. He looked as if he was in his early thirties. "Hey Ms. Harper. Your awake." he said coming to stand at the other side of Derrick.

"Please, call me Ali. Ms. Harper makes me sound like I'm fifty." I said with a moan. I had a large migraine and I felt as though I had been hit by a bus.

The doctor chuckled and leaned down and took my blood pressure and pulse. A heart monitor was strapped onto me and every five seconds it beeped. "What happened to me?" I asked.

"You went into a seizure. Were in the clinic at the organization." Derrick said, stroking my hair.

"Their are multiple diagnoses we could give you, but I strongly believe you have epilepsy. Do you know what that is?" the doctor asked in a gentle voice.

I shook my head. "Epilepsy is a disease that gives you seizures. Some known causes are brain tumors, stress, or simply is genetic."

"Why do I have epilepsy?" I asked, confused.

"We don't think it's a brain tumor and we don't think it's genetic by the medical history. Are you having a lot of stress on you lately?" he asked.

"A little." I lied. It wasn't a little stress, it was a LOT of stress.

"We'll need you to stay overnight. Then, you'll be discharged tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully we will get the blood results back by then."

"Thanks doctor." Derrick said.

"No problem. Try to get some rest. Okay?"

I nodded my head as the doctor left the room. "Go to sleep, muffin." Derrick whispered in my ear.

"I'd say the same to you." I looked into his tired eyes. I scooted over so that he could climb into the bed. "Come." I said, patting the space next to me.
