A few days later, the club's first activity took place at an animal shelter. "Alright everyone," Mr. Z said one they arrived. "First, we're going to walk around the facility and see all of the animals. Then our job is to help clean the place up a bit. You all ready?" Natalie and Emma both joined the chorus of yes's coming from all of the club members. "Look at all of these poor animals," Emma said as they walked through the facility. "They're all so adorable. I wish I could take them all home with me so they don't have to suffer here." Natalie agreed. "When I get my own place after college, I'm gonna adopt a lot of animals," she said. "Hopefully one day animals won't have to go into animal shelters. People should adopt them instead of letting them sit in cages like this." After looking at all the animals, the two girls rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Their job was to clean out all of the cages and change their water dispensers. They filled their garbage bags with the old newspapers and wee pads. Once everyone was finished with their job they were allowed to play with the dogs. "Awww look at how cute he is," said Natalie while petting a corgi. Emma smiled while petting the lab in her lap. "I absolutely love dogs," Emma said. "They're so adorable and so fluffy." Natalie agreed. "I can't believe people would ever leave them in shelters. They're such great companions," she said. Emma stopped petting the lab so she could find some toys for the dogs to play with. When she found a small red ball, she played fetch with the little puppy. Seeing the lab running after the ball, the corgi quickly got up to run after it as well. Natalie and Emma took turns throwing the ball as the two dogs ran back and forth, rushing to get the ball before the other. Too soon it became time to leave the shelter. The class gave one last goodbye to the dogs and workers at the shelter before getting back on the bus. When they finally pulled into the college parking lot Natalie's stomach told her it was time to eat. "Hey, do you want to go to the deli down the street?" "Sure, hopefully it won't be too crowded," replied Emma. Luckily, when they got there it wasn't busy. The two got their sandwiches and sat down in the corner booth. "It was a lot of fun today, playing with all the dogs," said Emma. "Yeah. All I wanted to do was adopt them all. I can't help but feel bad because some of them might never get a real family," Natalie said while looking out the window sadly. "Yeah," Emma said. "There are just too many dogs out there for all of them to get families anyways so there's always going to be some in the shelters. But at least when we get out of college we can adopt a few dogs and give them a happy home." Natalie agreed. "I guess it's true though," she said. "You really can't make everyone happy in the end." Emma looked at Natalie sadly. "Well even if you can't make everyone else happy, you're still able to make yourself happy," she said. "So no more being sad about all of the dogs being in shelters. Lets enjoy dinner and be happy that we had a good day instead." Natalie smiled a little at Emma. "Fine," she said. Then both of the girls ate their sandwiches and spoke about their day at the shelter and what they might do next time with the club.
So sorry for the wait
