Today, we're here with AnneMcKae , author of Haunted Rayne, the story that won 1st Place in the Horror Category of our awards. We're excited to find out more about her and her story, so let's get right to the interview!
1. What was your inspiration for your winning story, Haunted Rayne?
Believe it or not, it's based off a dream I had! I had a dream that rapidly turned into a nightmare: I was sent off to a private school for rich folks, and I didn't fit in AT ALL. Over time, there were also these eerie shadows everywhere (most definitely inspired by the book "Fallen", which I'd been reading that summer). But then, they started whispering things and I couldn't understood them, and I explicitly remember it giving me that icky feeling as soon as their breath hit my ears. There is also a moment in chapter 6 that is a direct translation of a moment in my dream, and that is the moment in the underground tunnel with the hair and the scream. Feel free to read that section for details, if you haven't already (;
2. What about the horror genre attracts you to writing in it?
I have always had a love for horror films and novels. In fact, my favorite author of all time is Dean Koontz, who has had an immense impact on my writing style and imagery.
3. If you had to pick one song that you feel represents or speaks to your story what would it be?
I would want to pick two, because there are two stories being told. "Love Song Requiem" by Trading Yesterday and "Lady Labyrinth" by Ludovico Einaudi
4. How do you deal with writer's block?
My momma. I just riff ideas off of her, and suddenly I know exactly what to do.
5. What are some of your hobbies outside of writing?
I love anything creative. I enjoy making music, writing songs, and editing photos.
6. Where would you go for your dream vacation?
Some place with crystal blue waters. I would also love to go where I can learn to scuba dive and maybe one day swim with sharks.
7. Where do you write? What is your routine/process?
I wrote at home on my computer. Sometimes if an idea comes to me while I'm walking or driving, then I'll open my "Notes" app and use speech-to-text in order to get the thoughts out quickly.
8. What is your dream career?
If not an author, then my dream was always to be an actress or songwriter. Although, realistically speaking, I've chosen to pursue forensic psychology haha. I am about to begin my second semester of college.
9. How did you feel when you were announced as a 1st place winner?
It felt wonderful! In a lot of ways, I fear my story is a slow-burn, so for it to be recognized and chosen as first place is an unbelievable accomplishment and vote of confidence. I cannot wait to finish this story and begin working on the next — (which for anyone who is curious, my next story will be a dark urban-fantasy/horror story about creatures that are half-human/half-elemental. As per usual, there will also be a fun romance along the way c; haha)
10. How many cats is too many cats?
Don't hate me... but ONE cat is too many. Unless it's a Norwegian Forest Cat, in which case, I'll take three please!
