Admittedly, I don't read many horror stories. But of the few I have read, I'd say I mainly look for details, just like I would any other story.
I am a visual guy, so I like seeing pictures and actions going on. With books, my imagination is all I have. So if I read a horror story with good detail, I'll have a higher chance of being scared because I can see what's going on in the story in my head.
