For as long as the universe could remember, there'd been 'The Marks'. Everyone had one.
At first, The Mark was a hollow circle on the inner side of your right wrist. As the days passed, that circle would disappear like a timer, leaving you with some indication of when you were to meet your soulmate. It was by no means a precise and accurate method, but sure enough, the circle would have completely disappeared on the day you were within short range of your soulmate.
Once you had had them in your life, The Mark would become a filled circle of black ink rather than the thinner outline it had been before. Again, the circle will tick away until it becomes nothing but a pale patch of skin. But once the tattoo had disappeared for the second time, your time was up.
If you were lucky, you'd find your soulmate within the time The Mark provides. Should this happen, the tattoo would transform once again into the name of your soulmate.
It was a system with many flaws.
Nowadays, knowing your soulmate wasn't enough. The first change would occur when you met them, the second change was a lot more difficult to come about. It wasn't just about finding out who they were, it was being with them, loving them and being able to admit it to yourself before The Mark had a chance to take you from your own life.
There were people under so much pressure to love their soulmate before their tattoo faded that they'd confessed their love for the wrong person, forced themselves into the mindset that they loved another person before they were wholly ready to and then there were people like Sally Jackson who's Mark would fade probably before they truly knew who their soulmate was.
