Chapter Twelve

“I have a proposition.”

“No.”

“But, you didn’t even hear me out!” I whined, tugging on his sleeve. Deidara distastefully glared down on me, giving me the right mind to shut up. Even though I knew it was probably in my best interest to, I didn’t.

“Please?”

He rolled his eyes, sitting down on the tree root. And, yet, we were almost the same height, now.

“Is it at least reasonable, HN?” I thoughtfully tapped my chin, along with my foot. Was it? I mean, it was only the single-handedly most important thing to me. To have the people I cared most about meet. Really, I didn’t see the harm in it. But, I knew there would be a really thin line between destruction and peace. If it did happen, chaos mostly winning out.

“I think so.”

“If you had to think about it, then it’s a no, hm.” Deidara grunted, not easing up on his glare. Not that I wasn’t used to it, by now. Deidara always glared. More often than not, really. He was always so bitter, now. And, really, I felt no one else was to blame but his new partner.

Like the last, Deidara wouldn’t tell me his name. And, even though I wasn’t even spared that, he refused to even describe him. He was male. And, he was annoying. That’s all he would say on the matter. Although, I realized that the last partner he had, Deidara could actually tolerate. Respect, even.

But, this one? This one he despised.

“It’s really important. Please?” He pressed his lips in a thin line before sighing.  I smiled, kneeling down beside him. It was really the only kind of acknowledgment he was going to give me on the matter. But, hey, I was going to take what I could get.

“I want you to meet my friend.”

“You don’t have friends, yeah.”

I pursed my lips, continuing, “I do…now. And, he’s important. So, I want you to meet him.”

“Why?”

“Well, because I’ve told him about you, and he ask-”

Deidara leaned forward, a devilish grin playing along his lips, making me suddenly forget what I was going to say.

“You talk about me, hm?”

“I-I may have mentioned you once o-or twice.” Deidara brushed my cheek with his fingers, grabbing a piece of auburn hair between his fingers. It was obvious he was just playing around as he twirled my hair around his finger, but to me, in that moment, he couldn’t have been more…seductive.

“And, what do you say about me?” His blue eyes glinted into my own amber colored orbs, causing my breath to hitch. Sure, he practically invades my privacy in every way, and I’m perfectly normal. But, now? It was all so sinister and alluring that the experience actually made it hard for me to breathe.

“No-noth-” I had cut myself off, not able to talk around the lump in my throat. I tried swallowing past it; but no matter how many times I did, it wouldn’t go down.

Deidara tucked the thin strand of hair behind my ear, leaning in, again.

“Fine. But, it’ll have to cost you, hm.”

“Cost me what?”

He grinned, hopping up. “You’ll see, yeah.”

We had walked back with a silence between us, me not being able to decide if I liked it or not.

This time, it was Deidara who was humming. A habit he picked up from me, I suppose. While I, on the other hand, worriedly chewed on my nails.

It’d cost me? Cost me what? And, not only that, but he agreed. Actually agreed. To be honest, I hadn’t counted on that. I had at least expected him to make me beg, get down on my hands and knees and grovel. He hadn’t. And, now, now I was worried.

Would Deidara really go as far as trying to kill Tobi?

I mean, if he got aggravated enough, I wouldn’t put it past him to at least try. He did, after all, try to blow up my door. Which, I might add, he succeeded in. And, not realizing I was still propped against it, had gotten a splinter the size of my forearm lodged into my bicep. Not a very pleasant experience.

But, it was the perfect example of what Deidara was capable of. It had only been the weakest of bombs, but it had done serious damage. Deidara had let his anger get the best of him, and that was dangerous.

“When do I meet this friend of yours, anyways?” I shot him a shy glance, and then shrugged. They always came at the most random times, perfectly spaced out from the other’s visit. Almost as if it had been planned.

“I think he’ll be here, tomorrow…if you’re free, then.” Deidara grinned, pulling my hand in his.

“You know, I think that’ll be perfect, yeah.” I felt myself relax; glad to see he was at least excited. Too bad he was excited about the wrong thing.

With Deidara, it was always the sinister things he would be excited about.
