The first week of school passed quickly. Stupid classes, even stupider classmates, lots chuckling every time me and Grace did something even remotely like a couple.
Then the second week was over.
Then the third.
Then the fourth.
Then it was that time of year again.
September 7th.
Grace's birthday.
She got up to leave to go to her house but I grabbed her arm and begged her to stay.
"Please" I said in almost a whisper.
"Page if I don't go he might come over here and hurt you. I can't risk you getting hurt trying to save me."
"I just want you to have a good birthday for once." I whispered. "You deserve it."
"But when we graduate I'll get good birthdays. We'll leave this town. You can go completely overboard with presents and cake and whatever the hell you want."
"But-"
"Page I can't have you getting hurt."
"Fine. If you won't stay, I'll go with you."
"No. Page, no."
"If you come it won't do anything. Either you'll get hurt too or you'll end up watching me get hurt."
"Grace can't you just hit him back? Hide? Run away for a day or two?"
She sighed.
"It won't work."
"Please! Don't leave!" I begged, tears streaming down my cheeks when she turned for the door.
I desperately gripped Grace's arms.
"Baby, I'm sorry but I have to go."
I clung onto Grace and sobbed into her shoulder.
"We can call the police. Report the past abuse and the neglection and the drugs. Have them arrested." I said desperately.
"I'm not 18 yet. I'll be taken away."
"We can adopt you. No more abuse, no more neglection, no more drunk stoner parents."
Grace sighed and rubbed my back.
"I'm sorry baby. I gotta go. I'll text you, okay?" She asked and kissed the top of my head.
"Please don't go! Please!" I begged.
"I'm sorry. I have to."
"I'll text you."
"And I'll come back tomorrow, okay?" She pulled my face away from her shoulder to look into my eyes.
"Please stay as safe as you can." I said- my voice shaking.
"I will." She kissed me softly.
"I'll be back tomorrow."
"Okay. I love you."
"I love you too."
I kissed her again.
