Part Nineteen - Part One
•••
Maybe falling for my sister's boyfriend is wrong, but the shivers that crawl up my spine whenever his fingers brush against mine or his smile lights up his face are undeniable.
His crooked smile and those brown eyes that sparkle with every laugh draw me in, like a magnet pulling me closer. My thoughts are consumed by him, driving me to the brink of madness.
A voice in my head whispers, "you're crazy in love," and it's so loud, it drowns out everything else.
I used to think I was in denial, but now the intensity of my feelings for Scott terrifies me. I shove the thought aside and glance up at him.
Scott hovers above me beneath the tree. Sunlight filters through the leaves, casting a golden halo around him. His hair falls over his forehead, framing his eyes like a portrait.
Still nestled under the tree, I let out a heavy sigh.
"What's wrong?" he asks softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from my face. "Did I say something that upset you?"
I force a smile and shake my head. "No, not really. Though you do say things that disturb me often. But that's beside the point."
Scott's brows knit together. "So what's the point?"
I run my hand over my face and meet his gaze. "I don't know. It feels like we're stuck here forever, and I never thought I'd admit it, but I miss home."
He chuckles, his thumb grazing my cheekbone. "I know you miss it, my Squirrel. Don't lose hope; everything will work out."
His reassurance melts away my doubts. I remember the mornings he left breakfast at my door, the way he flirted with me even with my sister around. I should have put a stop to it, but I didn't. And now look where we are.
I shift my gaze to the road ahead, a long, winding stretch that seems to go on forever. I shake my head and gingerly sit up. Scott joins me.
"My back feels like it's about to explode," I say, rubbing the soreness. "Anything happen while I was asleep? Oh, right—there's no one around but us."
Scott smirks and runs a hand through his hair. "More like soulmates, yeah?" He chuckles awkwardly. "We're still lost."
I groan and lie back, staring at the sky. "So we have to keep walking. At this point, I might lose it."
He opens his mouth to speak, but I press my index finger against his lips, silencing him. A rattling noise echoes nearby. My brows furrow as I scan the surroundings.
The rattling grows louder. "What's that sound?"
Scott stands, eyes darting around. "I don't see anything..." He glances nervously. "Zayn," he warns in a low voice that snaps my attention to him.
"What?" I stand up and peer into the distance. "You're staring at nothing, Scott."
Scott steps forward and grabs my arm with a firm grip. Confusion knots my forehead as I look at him. "So now you're not making me leave?" I scoff and shake my head. "Seriously?"
