I walked into class with my peers, staying near the back and at a distance from my other classmates. Not that anyone would want to notice me, I was the quiet and secluded kid who no one liked.
I took my seat all the way at the back, a set of empty chairs blocking me from sitting near my classmates. My hands were cupped neatly on my lap, as I stared through the mask at our teacher. My icy blue eyes were always focused, and I seemed to get my ability to stay organized and contain knowledge from my father. I was practically a teacher's pet, since I was well-behaved and intelligent.
I sat in math class, taking notes efficiently, when a paper ball landed on my notebook. I looked up, not seeing anyone who seemed suspicious from throwing it. I decided to set it aside, focusing on my work instead.
After about an hour, the bell rang, and everyone began to file out of the room. I set my stuff in my bag, and noticed the ball that still sat at the corner of my desk. My curiosity peaked, and I unfolded it, staring at the message written on it.
'Meet me and my friends by the swings at recess!'
I scoffed at the incorrect grammar, but I was too thrilled that someone invited me to play, instead of calling me names. I made little chirping noises in excitement, as I quickened my pace to leave the classroom.
By the time I made it outside, I was practically bouncing up-and-down in excitement. I set my backpack on the wall of the school, and trotted towards the swings. That's where I got the biggest surprise of my life. There, standing before me, was Pepper, Troy, Jack, and Emily. They were the biggest bullies in the school, and they asked me play with them?
"Ah, she made it!" Pepper spoke up. Her brown curls were in neat pigtails, and they bounced whenever she moved. Her skin was an olive tone and she had dark freckles speckled across her nose.
"Mm, thought she wouldn't come, did ya?" Troy asked. He was a blonde boy, the typical rich-looking kind that looked snotty upon appearance.
"Ah, she wouldn't resist playing with us, would she?" Jack said. He had dark brown hair, and seemed like a jock.
"EE, I'm excited!" Emily shrieked, her straight-blonde hair in a lumpy braid down her back.
I stood there, even more excited that the popular bullies wanted to hang out with me.
"U-Um, what were you planning on playing?" My soft voice asked.
"Well, Remi, we were hoping to play tag!" Pepper giggled, clapping her hands together.
My heart sunk. Tag? Of all things! My eyes appeared to show fear from under my bird mask, as they started to laugh.
"Aw, what's wrong, too scared to play with the big kids?" Jack poked, laughing out loud.
"N-no, it's just.. I could hurt you!" My voice quivered, as my excitement was quickly covered with nerves.
Troy just continued the teasing. "Ah, she's to scarrrrrred. What a chicken." He made clucking noises as they others played along, making more chicken noises.
I felt a flair of anger that had never risen before. Why were they making fun of me! It was true! I'd seen father kill people like that, and he told me never to make contact with anyone using my hands, as I could kill them. They must've seen the anger, and began a fit of cackling. That was enough for me.
"FINE! I'll play tag with you, but don't complain when I say I told you so!" I yelled, folding my arms as I glared.
"Hm, FINALLY! Pepper is gonna be it first, everyone run!" Troy shouted, darting away.
I ran as fast as I could, heading towards the bushes. When I turned my head, I saw Pepper chasing Emily, who was heading towards my position.
It went like this for most of recess, me narrowly avoiding the tagger, which rotated between the bullies frequently. I was small, and even with my robes, I was able to avoid them. That was, until Troy managed to tag me. My heart started to beat rapidly, knowing that I had to tag someone before the others started complaining.
I raced around, "accidentally" missing someone every time I was close. I realized I could keep this up until recess was over. That was, until Jack came up to me, taunting me from inches away. This sparked my anger once again, and I reached out my hand to tag him. Before I could stop my hand, it collided with Jack's arm briefly.
