Chapter 15

                                                ~ No one's POV ~

The odd group made quick distance in the facility as they had to practically run to keep up with the large footsteps 682 could make with each step. Doc had started panting due to not being used to this much physical exercise. They were all eventually able to stop in front of a door with big letters plaster onto it reading "GATE B". The MTF units normally came through Gate A, so hopefully they wouldn't have many issues getting through here. But of course, they have a massive 20 foot monster to try and sneak out too so this might be an issue.

682 used his large claws to grab at the door and pull them apart forcefully. "Go through. Now." He grunted. They all hurries through and 682 shoved his massive torso and tail through. He then looked up and gave a rare smirk. Above them was a octagonal skylight, and they knew immediately what it was for. Doc tried to leap forward to get him to stop, but 682 already grabbed the edge and crashed himself through. So much for being sneaky.

"Alright, come to the elevator. 682 will probably cause enough of a commotion to let us get out." Larry said, gesturing for them to follow. They all entered the elevator and it took them only a good 30 seconds to reach the main floor. They peaked out and saw 682 rampaging towards the southern wall, so they strategically decided to go the other way.

They navigated their way in the shadows, hesitating as a helicopter would pass overhead in fear of being discovered. Doc had subconsciously put his hand into his bag, placing it onto Mask for a twinge of comfort.

                                                     ~ Doc's POV ~

We had finally reached the northern wall, which seemed to be quite deserted. Larry went forwards and dripped his corrosive bbq sauce over it, slowly but surely burning through. The wall was quite thick, so it took a few minutes before the other side was visible.

We all made it through safely, finding the looks of mountains and forests behind the facility. We made a mad dash for the treeline, terrified of the idea of a passing helicopter to see. Once we made it into the dense trees, we kept moving. If we wanted any chance of not getting caught, we would have to travel as much as we could today.

-- Several Hours Passed --

I had no way of knowing quite how far we went, but I am sure it was quite a distance. We could no longer see the massive facility, but there was nothing ahead of us either. We were completely lost in the woods.

The sun had begun to set, and I could see the exhausted look in Remi's eyes. I couldn't keep pushing her today or she'd collapse. We had arrived at a small pond, and I scoped out a cave along a hillside. Of course, there were many trees around us so we wouldn't have to worry about any air force seeing us, it was quite perfect.

As soon as we entered the cave, Shy and Remi collapsed on the floor. I found a secluded spot to sit down, as I was now feeling the dull throbbing in my calves from overuse. It would be quite sore tomorrow. But, my mind was elsewhere now.

I removed Mask and placed him facing me on my lap. I placed my fingers to his temple and my chest warmed at his whispering voice in my head.

Ah, αγάπη μου, you have finally returned. His words felt like sweet honey in my mind.

Yes, we have left the facility and are quite a distance from it. If we want to try and properly escape though, we have many more miles to travel. Poor Remi and Shy are quite exhausted though, so it'll be rough.

Good good. I wish to be there with you right now, but I am quite blind and as useful as a rock.

Oh, quit that depressing tone. Speaking of, how do we fix you?  I asked quizzically.

Well, you see, I was formed by the gods. It is no easy task to rebuild me. It takes a certain metal called adamantine that is quite rare. Luckily, as you are in a cave, you might be able to find it. It has a green-ish grey hue and may even look like crystals. If you are able to retrieve it, I shall be able to do the rest.

Why must that be so complicated? I sighed, standing and grabbing my bag. It seemed like, during our conversation, everyone else had drifted off. Just my luck.

I created a torch from an old piece of wood and some chemicals and made my way down deeper into the cave.

I was quite deep into the cave, listening to Mask hum delicate tunes into my mind as I searched.

Hey Doc, do you remember our wedding song?  Mask hummed. A smiled spread across my face as I remember the sweet tune that played on such a special day. I remembered the first time we had heard that song together.

~ Flashback ~

Mask entered the room, slamming the door shut quickly and locked it. Soon after, the sound of pounding footsteps sounded as shouts rung through the halls. He panted, pressing his back to the door until he knew the guards were a good distance away from him.

He raised his eyes to look at the room. It was the typical researchers office, except this one had dozens of plants in it. Somebody definitely had a hobby. A soft tune played in the background from a radio off to the side. It was a Hispanic male singer with a guitar to accompany his honey voice.

"Siempre ha estado allí~"

"El hermano del destino~"

"Nunca solo me sentí~"

He enjoyed listening to it as he moved forwards, stopping only when heard a groan. He turned to the noise and noticed a black figure behind a large fern. He could feel his host's back open up as he subconsciously let six fleshy tentacles slither out, ready to snap any neck that needed it. He inched forwards, hunching down into an attacking position when the figure suddenly turned around.

Just at the moment, the guitar in the sound began to pick up.

"Y yo no pude explicar~"

"Por qué tenía que pasarlo mal~"

"Y no, lo vi~"

Mask stopped, staring deeply into the fiery orange eyes that the person held. He was entranced, his tentacles disappearing into his host's back as he felt sudden ease. There was only one other time he had felt such a feeling, both in his mind and his heart.

A forest so many centuries ago.

"Mi amigo, Doctor, no te he visto en mucho tiempo." He instinctively moved to Spanish just by listening to the music.

"Y tú." The bird-man responded in kind. "How have you been mon cher masque?"

He felt his heart beat faster at the way Doc said his name in his elegant tone. Oh how he missed it.

The music died as their feelings bloomed.

~ End Flashback ~

That was an amazing song, wasn't it? I thought back, still holding a rare smile on his hidden face.

Mask began to sing it into my mind and I began to lose track of myself as I tuned into his sweet melody. His voice, even in my head, was amazing.

I suddenly tripped over something and turned, only to see a jagged, obsidian-esque rock erected out of the ground.

"Oh, seems we have found what we were looking for." I said aloud.
